Assignment 1

Design of different elements in a DOMESTIC SHED

(45% of total mark)

The aim of this project is to help you to learn how to use loading codes and to
better understand the load paths and design process. It gives you a perspective
of what engineers do. You will also learn how to calculate the design loads and
estimate whether or not the structural members can carry those loads.
The final report due date and suggested completion time for different parts of the
project are provided on Page 6 of this handout.

1. PROJECT EXTENT

design the following structural elements for a domestic shed:

• • Determine the design loads
• • Purlins
• • Bracings and layout
• • Rafters
• • Columns

The following standard member abbreviations have been used in this handout:
UB = Universal Beam
UC = Universal Column
PFC = Parallel Flange Channel
EA = Equal Angle
CHS = Circular Hollow Section
