Familial Bond
1 ANSWERS
Add your parents, grandparents and great-grandparents, and you are well on your way to building
your own tree.
However, as we all know, family is an incredibly complex concept with biological, legal, social,
and emotional elements. Hence, the question of who counts as family in a family tree is far from
simple. In our daily lives, family often has less to do with biological or legal connections and
more to do with personal relationships. Those people who are intimate parts of our lives, who
PIB Activity
we love and care for, who care for us, are our family. What makes a mother, father, sibling, child,
grandchild is seldom straightforward.
Nevertheless, in a genealogical sense people often get muddled and are unsure of who
should be added to their family tree. Adoptions and stepparent relationships, or the discovery
that a parent or sibling is not related biologically – all these scenarios may cause some confusion.
Even if we do not experience any of these instances in our lives, most of us will encounter them
as we dig deeper into our family’s past, leading us to ask:
“What constitutes family in a family tree?”
HEBAT Bacaan
“Who should I add and who should I leave out?”
To answer these questions, we must ask ourselves another question, “What is the purpose
of a family tree?” Is it to lay out a biological map of our past, or to tell as accurate a story as
possible about the lives of our ancestors?
[B5]
Some say, the purpose of genealogy is to simply understand the biological connections
of humans. After all, family history researchers spend much of their time digging through old
Textbook
records and histories trying to better understand the realities of those they are researching. This
work makes it incredibly apparent that family is much more complex than a bloodline. Yet most
of us feel a need to create a tree that tells a biological story – a physical record of what we are
made of to understand our ancestors and ourselves. If family is more than biology, and it is family
that shapes us, than shouldn’t our trees be more than biological record books? If we create a
tree that reflects only physical relationships, are we really building an accurate picture of our
ancestors’ lives?
If we want to develop a full and accurate picture of our family’s past, we need to document
[B6]
everything we can about the lives that created it – and that includes taking the time to discover
and include non-biological relationships. We need to tell the very complex story that is family,
generation after generation, if we want to understand where we come from.

The first event was a march past comprising the representatives of the different houses

the batons. The other events included the long jump and high jump.
The tug-of-war between the teachers and the students of the upper forms was always looked

behaviours alone or with other animals or people.
For every behaviour an animal displays, there is a reason for the behaviour. For example,
birds build nests because they are where the birds will live and raise their young. Dogs sit
or roll over because they will usually expect a treat or a pat on their heads. People blink to
moisten or protect their eyes. Spiders build webs to catch their prey and for protection. Some
animal behaviours may be learned, and other behaviours are a part of the animal at birth, and
they do not need to learn them. They are born with already knowing how to perform certain
behaviours. There are two types of behaviours: innate behaviours and learned behaviours.
Innate behaviours are those that an animal already has at its birth. The more intelligent
an animal is, the less innate behaviour it will have. For example, humans are the most
intelligent animals on Earth, so they have the least number of innate behaviours. Most
human behaviours are learned behaviours.
If an animal is not born with a particular behaviour, then it must be a learned behaviour.
Learned behaviours are developed because of experience, conditioning and learning. The

behaviours come about due to an animal’s interaction with the environment or it is taught to
the animal. It may seem animals and people are born with some of the learned behaviours,
but they are not. For example, people are not born with the ability to talk, even though it
seems to come easy once a young child begins speaking. Babies have to learn how to talk. If

Portrait of an Artist
He was a bad boy, never paid attention in class and was kicked from one school to another

“I was not bothered with my studies,” artist
S.T. Long said, his voice tinged with regret. “I never
paid attention in class. (1) Lessons were boring
and only art interested me . The
sketches and drawings in my textbooks bore testimony
to that.”

The little that I knew was not enough for me to get around, let alone hold art exhibitions.”
However, the artist decided that he had to start somewhere. (3) Every day, without
fail he would get a copy of the English newspaper and pick out a news item . With
the help of a dictionary, he would check the meaning of each difficult word and memorise
it. Persistence and patience paid off and a few months later, he was reading newspapers
and was able to carry on a conversation with ease.
Mr Long, 43, smiled as he recalled those delinquent years. “If I had studied hard,
I might have had a better life and wouldn’t have had to struggle so hard to make ends
meet,” he said.

Mr Long went to Paris in 1966 under a government scholarship to study art for three
years at the La ‘Ecole Des Beaux-Art College. (4) Then, he went to do his Masters at the Royal

three years.”
Some of his works, done over the last 27 years, have been bought by the National Art

SoW: Lesson 49
Dear Amy,
How are you? Yesterday I found an old picture of you. I can’t remember how old
you were then but I’m guessing you were in your teens. You had sent it to me from your
hometown with the message “You will always have a special place in my heart.”
My eyes started to tear when I thought of you. How I wish I could show you that
picture now but we are thousands of miles apart. We’ve not met for six years. The picture
brought back so many memories. How we used to love spending time together. We were
always up to mischief and would gang up against our siblings whenever there was a
chance.
School breaks were so much fun as there was always an outing in store. We would
take a bus or taxi to wherever we were going, and whenever we walked on the streets, we
always held hands. We looked out for each other when we were out in public.
Your mum whipped up the most scrumptious breakfasts, lunches and dinners. She
also made special treats for us like chocolate cake, muffins, bread and other mouth-
watering cookies.
I miss you tremendously, my dear cousin. I hope to meet you soon. When will you be
coming down to visit us over here?

After nine hours of cleaning and scrubbing, as usual, Madam Huang was ready to have
a good meal and rest. Whatever little she earned was just enough to pay her bills and buy her
food. She was about to sit down and have her meal when there was a knock at her door. She
opened it.
A young girl was standing there crying. Madam Huang asked her gently what was wrong.
Between sobs, she told Madam Huang that her mother was very ill. The family was too poor
to bring her to the doctor.
The little girl had been going around knocking on doors. Unfortunately, no one was
willing to help. Madam Huang took pity on her. Abandoning her food, she followed the girl
back to her house.
The bare house confirmed what the little girl had told her. Madam Huang called for a taxi
and brought the lady to the nearest clinic. She told the doctor about the family’s situation and
asked the doctor to find help for the family. The doctor was helpful.
Before leaving the clinic, she gave the girl some money and told her to take care of herself
and her mother.

Travelling reminds those paying attention that they are not
the only ship in the sea, that this is a huge world and that
they are only a small pea in it.
2 Whether by plane, train, ship or automobile, travel is generally a pleasurable
experience. One of the travelling benefits is to relax. Too often, people get wrapped up in
their lives, their daily routine of working, sleeping, eating and living. They become self-
absorbed to the point it affects their health, their happiness and their perspective.
3 Another benefit of travelling is coming to see one’s native country in a different light, in
a different way. This is done by being able to compare and contrast home from a foreign
location, most always through travelling. People do not understand what it means to be
a citizen of their native country until they have seen it from a distance, from another
country.

4 Travelling also makes one gain life’s experience. Many people in the world do not have
the luxury of going to another country for pleasure or even to another city in their native

22 January. I know you like watching music concerts.
(2) After going into the music hall at Istana Budaya, there was a slideshow on the

(3) After that , Celia, the Malaysian songstress sang the famous “To Let It Be” and
“The Day I Smiled”. The audience stood and applauded at the end of her performance. There
was a magic show which lasted for about fifteen minutes. (4) Then , there was a
Malay cultural dance by a group of teenagers.
(5) Finally , came the long-awaited moment, for Boney M’s group to perform.
Their performance was the highlight of the music concert, of course. They sang their
famous “By the Rivers of Babylon, Daddy Cool, Rasputin” and (6) lastly , “It’s
a Holi Holiday”. The audience sang along, (7) while some were screaming in
excitement. My sisters and I were thrilled throughout Boney M’s performance.
(8) In the end , Farian, the founder of Boney M’s team, came down the stage
and shook hands with some VIPs, seated in the front row. It’s amazing that the team could
perform absolutely well.
The concert ended at about 11.00 p.m. and we returned home feeling happy. It was a
concert worth watching! When are you coming over to pay us a visit? Hope to meet you
soon.

There was drama at the KLIA airport on Monday, 14th May 20__. Two national athletes,
Azman Hanif and Rosman Ismail, were barred from boarding the midnight flight to Dubai
and then to Kazakhstan. They and eight other athletes and two officials were on their way to
take part in the Qosanov Memorial Championship that was held in Almaty, Kazakhstan on
May 19 – 20.
Competing in several events, this championship was the final Olympics qualifier. Azman
is the SEA Games 100 m champion and Rosman is the 100 m national record holder.
Before leaving Penang (where they were in training) for Kuala Lumpur, the athletes took
PCR tests for COVID-19. The results were emailed to them. But Rosman and Azman did
not check their emails.
That night at the airport, eight of the athletes got an all-clear from security and passed
the airport gates. But when it came to Rosman and Azman’s turns, security checked their
emails for the PCR tests results and found Azman to be COVID-19 positive and Rosman was
listed as ‘close contact’. The two athletes were stopped from boarding the plane.
Security now held back the entire group who were in complete shock. Only after much
intervention from the National Sports Council (NSC) and records shown to say that the rest
of the group was COVID-19 negative, was the group allowed to board the plane.
Azman and Rosman were quarantined for two weeks. Azman had visited his grandfather
before the latter died of COVID-19 two weeks ago. Both buddies trained and travelled
together from Penang.

Tasik Chini
Tasik Chini is located in Pekan, Pahang. A group of Orang Asli lives near Tasik Chini. They rely
on the lake as their main source of clean water. But iron ore mining activities nearby have
polluted the lake. The cutting down of trees has changed the green landscape. Now there are
red, bare hills. The villagers find it difficult to hunt or find forest products. This Orang Asli
community appealed to the state government to stop mining and logging activities.
In 2019, the Pahang State government made Tasik Chini as a permanent forest reserve.
The size of the area involved is 4,498 hectares or the size of 6,000 football fields. This means
no mining or logging activities can be carried out. New licences for mining and logging
would not be issued.
Two years ago, several mining operators that were still operating under their old licences
were given stop-work notices as they did not follow standard operating procedures (SOPs).
For example, they did not mark the boundaries of their mining sites, put up fencing, plant
trees, register their machines, or put up signs. The operators also had to pay a deposit of
RM250,000. Only when they fulfilled these conditions were they allowed to continue their
mining operations.
In 2019 too, to revive the Tasik Chini area, the state government planted hundreds of
trees. The rivers draining into Tasik Chini were also looked into. For example, people were
fined for illegal land clearing for farming along Sungai Ichat. Two years later, this river was
declared Class 1, which means minimum treatment was required. The water was considered
clean.

Last Saturday, 12th June, my family and I moved house. My father bought a house just five kilometers away. He did

At home, we packed our things in boxes. There were 50 boxes altogether! We threw out a lot of

On the day of moving, a big lorry came at 9 a.m. By noon, all our things were moved to the new house.
Then, we started arranging our things. By evening, most of the unpacking was done.
