terms is 1102

a) Show that 𝑎 + 14𝑑 = 38

b) If the sum of the second and seventh term is 13, then find the values of a and d

A) If 7 times the 7 𝑡ℎ term of an Arithmetic Sequence is equal to 11 times its 11𝑡ℎ term, find
18 𝑡ℎ term.
B) b) Find the 23𝑟𝑑 and 𝑛 𝑡ℎ terms of the arithmetic sequence −𝟏𝟏, −𝟗, −𝟕, −𝟓 …
C) c) If the third fourth and fifth terms of an arithmetic sequence are (𝟑𝒙 − 𝟓), (𝒙 + 𝟏) 𝐚𝐧𝐝
( 𝟐𝐱 − 𝟖). Find the common difference
The arithmetic sequence has the first term, a, and the common difference, d. The sum of the first
21 terms is 168
a) State the formula for the sum of the first n terms in an arithmetic sequence

b) Show, by using the formula stated in part a, that 𝒂 + 𝟏𝟎𝒅 = 𝟖.

c) If the third term and the fourth term are added, the value is 48. By using this information and
part b, find the values of the first term and the common difference in the arithmetic sequence.

Geometric Sequence
The 5th term of a Geometric progression is −48 and the 7th term is −12 The common ratio is
negative.
a) Find the values of the first term and common ratio
A new type of peach tree is planted in the orchard, in the first month after planting the trees, the
orchard workers worked 625 hours. In the second and third months after planting the trees, the
time spent working on the trees was 500 and 400 respectively.
The number of hours the orchard workers spend tending to the peach trees each month follows a
geometric sequence.

a) Show that the common ratio for number of hours worked month by the orchard workers is 𝒓 =
𝟎. 𝟖.
b) Write the expression that would give the number of hours worked by the orchard workers in
the nth month.
c) Use the formula in part b) to find how many hours orchard workers will work in the fifth
month.
d) In the first three months after planting the orchard workers worked a total of 1525 hours, how
many hours in total will
the orchard workers work in the FOLLOWING NINE MONTHS? Write the answer to the
nearest hour.
Please note this is not the same as the total hours worked in the first nine months.

Mabel has downloaded a virus on to her computer which is corrupting (destroying) the stored
information on the hard drive. The pattern of corruption of stored information follows this
pattern; after the first hour, the virus has corrupted 6 GB, the second hour, the virus has corrupted
another 5.1 GB, and after the third hour, the virus has corrupted another 4.335 GB. The amount
of information corrupted per hour follows a geometric progression.
a) Find the common ratio in the geometric series for stored information being corrupted per
hour. (3 Marks)
b) How much stored information has been corrupted after ninth hour? (3 Marks)
c) How much stored information has been corrupted, in total, after 5 hours? (4 Marks)

One country saw the plight of one particular bird named “ The little Flutter”, and took action by
banning the killing of the Little Flutter at the end of 1989. The model for the number of Little
Flutter birds is 𝐍 𝐭 = 𝟒𝟎 𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝟏 + 𝟑𝒆 𝒌𝒕 At the end of 2019, 30 years later, the population
number of Little Flutter birds was estimated as 13 732.

a) Rearrange the equation 𝐍 𝐭 = 𝟒𝟎 𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝟏 + 𝟑𝒆 𝒌𝒕 to 𝑘 =

b) What would be the estimated number of Little Flutter birds using the model N t = 40 000 1 +
3𝑒 𝑘𝑡 at the end of 1989 as this is the initial year of the banning of killing the Little Flutter.
c) In your own words, what is the meaning of the phrase “At the end of 2019, 30 years later, the
population number of Little Flutter was estimated as 13 732.” Show where the numbers
would be substituted into the model.
d) Show that 𝑘 = −0.015 (Do not substitute the value of 𝒌 = −𝟎. 𝟎𝟏𝟓 and put into 𝑵 𝒕 )
Using the model, 𝐍 𝒕 = 𝟒𝟎 𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝟏 + 𝟑𝒆 𝒌𝒕 , estimate the number Little Flutter birds at the
end of 2022
