Case Study II:

The island of Kauai in Hawaii is a popular tourist destination known for its beautiful beaches,
lush forests, and outdoor activities such as hiking and surfing. A group of local tourism
businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and tour operators, has come together to form a
destination management organization (DMO) with the goal of promoting sustainable tourism on
the island. However, they face a number of challenges related to balancing economic growth
with environmental protection and preserving the island's unique culture and way of life.

The DMO has identified several key issues that they must address to achieve their goals. These
include:
1. Overcrowding and congestion in popular tourist areas, leading to environmental
degradation and negative impacts on local communities.
2. Insufficient infrastructure to support sustainable tourism, such as public transportation
and waste management systems.
3. The need to balance economic growth with environmental protection and preservation
of cultural heritage.
4. Lack of education and awareness among tourists and local residents regarding
sustainable tourism practices.

The DMO has developed a comprehensive plan to address these challenges, which includes:
1. Developing a sustainable tourism action plan to guide tourism development on the
island, including measures to manage visitor numbers and limit environmental
impacts.
2. Investing in sustainable infrastructure such as public transportation, waste
management systems, and eco-friendly accommodations.
3. Supporting local businesses that prioritize sustainability and cultural preservation,
such as those offering farm-to-table dining or indigenous cultural experiences.
4. Educating tourists and local residents about sustainable tourism practices through
marketing campaigns, signage, and community events.
