A plan for career development gives a person's course toward reaching their career
goals. It involves evaluating oneself, honing skills, setting targets, and taking practical
measures. Such a plan provides a guideline toward personal growth and triumph in
one's profession.

2.Academic part:

2.1 Literature Review:

2.1.1 Employability in the Tourism Zone

Employability in the tourism zone means having determined skills and qualities that
make an individual relevant for employment within the tourism industry. Not only
does having technical skills increase the chances of employability in the tourism zone
but it also encloses interpersonal skills, versatility, and a customer-paramountic
approach (Cooper and Shepherd, 2016). The focal point of tourism literature lies in
the vocational training and education programs that ensure employability in the
tourism zone.

2.1.2 Entrepreneurship in the Tourism Sector

Tourism entrepreneurship is described by investment in new projects and ingenious


trade models. According to Hall (2018), entrepreneurship in the tourism sector is
well-connected to niche markets and feasible practices. According to Dredge and
Jamal Tourism literature not only highlights but also emphasises the aspect of
entrepreneurship that enables economic progression and opens new doors to jobs in
tourism destinations.
2.1.3 Current Job Market in the Tourism Sector

The tourism sector has faced variations on a large scale in the job market due to
external factors, such as global economic crises and pandemics (UNWTO, 2020). For
example, The COVID-19 pandemic, badly affected the industry, leading to job loss
and business closures. Nonetheless, as the world salvages from the pandemic, the job
market in the tourism sector is displaying signs of restoration, and the tourism sector
has again got the attention of tourists leading to new jobs and businesses.

2.1.4 Challenges and Opportunities

The tourism industry faces both challenges and opportunities. Challenges include
adhering to appropriate tourism etiquette, dealing with the effects of climate change,
and meeting the demand for more digital services from tourists. However, there are
also opportunities arising from the growing interest in eco-tourism, cultural tourism,
and digital marketing techniques (Lam et al., 2019). These topics are thoroughly
examined in tourism literature, and businesses in the tourism industry must have a
good understanding of them.

3. Self-assessment:

3.1 Strengths:

3.1.1 Interpersonal Skills:

Making new and good connections with people from various backgrounds is my skill
and this skill will help me in the tourism industry where interactions with tourists,
colleagues, and stakeholders are persistent and important.

3.1.2 Communication:

Effective communication is essential in every field and I excel in both written and
verbal communication. My communication skills help resolve issues.
3.1.3 Cultural Sensitivity:

I truly admire different cultures for giving respectful and memorable experiences to
me. Respect for each tourist individually is a fundamental requirement of our
industry.

3.1.4 Adaptability:

I quickly adapt to new trends and things and adjust to revolving circumstances which
is a valuable quality of any industry globally where sudden challenges arise.

3.1.5 Problem-Solving:

Solving problems is my unique skill and it helps me in thinking out of the box to find
solutions, which is beneficial when it comes to dealing with unusual travel
interruptions and customers interest.

3.2 Weaknesses:

3.2.1 Industry Blindness:

Meanwhile, where, I have a generic interest in tourism, I also lack in-depth


knowledge of some facets of the industry, such as strategies involved in tourism
marketing, viable tourism practices, and the art of tour guiding.

3.2.2 Networking:

I must work on broadening my professional network within the tourism sector


because networking increases job opportunities and gives a valuable understanding of
industry trends.
3.2.3 Digital Literacy:

In the modern globalized world digital landscape is increasing rapidly in the tourism
industry and to make my unique identity and place in the industry I must improve my
knowledge about the use of different technology platforms for bookings, customer
relationship management, and marketing.

3.2.4 Emotional strength:

While I am adaptable, I also sometimes don't find myself at ease to bounce back from
setbacks or difficult situations, which is a demanding skill in the tourism zone.

3.3 Values and Interests:

3.3.1 Eco-friendliness:

I genuinely give importance to eco-friendly tourism policies and have a strong passion
for informing tourists about eco-friendly and responsible travel. I would like my
career in tourism to coordinate with these values and play my role in decreasing the
industry's environmental impact.

3.3.2 Client Delight:

My top preference is to make sure that tourists have an unforgettable and fun-filled
experience. I am interested in roles where I can boost up customer satisfaction and
long-term positive memories.

3.3.3 Cultural Empowerment:

I have a great affection for cultural exchange and am very much interested in roles
that provide me with opportunities and also facilitate cross-cultural interactions and
raise awareness about positivity that lies within the cultural enrichment through
tourism experiences.

I am keen on looking for opportunities that provide room for endless learning and
improvements that are essential for career growth and development within the tourism
sector.

3.4 Obstacles to overcome:

3.4.1 Industry-Specific Education:

To resolve my lack of industry-specific knowledge, I plan to get myself enrolled in


courses or achieve certifications related to tourism it will facilitate me a lot in
understanding the industry.

3.4.2 Networking Efforts:

I will participate in events related to networking, join professional associations, and


explore mentorship chances in the tourism zone to increase my professional
networking.

3.4.3 Digital Proficiency:

I will learn about digitization in the tourism industry which will eventually help in
become proficient in technological areas widely used in the tourism industry, such as
booking systems, software, and digital marketing tools.

3.4.4 Emotional Training:

To increase my resilience, I will participate in activities related to stress management


and emotional intelligence training and will attend workshops on building mental
toughness to cope with challenging situations.
4. Skills, Qualifications, Experiences, Trends and Changes in Tourism Industry

To remain in the tourism industry, individuals must have a complete multi set of
skills, significant qualifications, and relevant experience.

4.1 Skills:

4.1.1 Customer Care:

When it comes to customer service individuals must have excellent command over
interpersonal and communication skills.

4.1.2 Business Development:

No business can exist in any industry without expertise in sales techniques and digital
marketing. These are crucial for advertising destinations, hotels, and tour packages.

4.1.3 Cultural Awareness:

In the tourism industry, people come from different backgrounds so having cultural
awareness is essential.

4.1.4 Problem-Solving:
Quick decisions and solutions to problems are necessary traits in tourism zones.

4.2 Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree in tourism management or hospitality.


4.2.1 Certifications:

Certified Travel Associate (CTA) or Certified Event Planner (CEP) enhances the
individual performance and its place in the market.

4.3 Experience:

4.3.1 Internships:

Getting practical experience from internships with travel agencies and hotels is
necessary.
4.3.2 Customer-Facing Roles:
Working at a front desk position or as a tour guide will help a lot in forming essential
skills.

4.4 Identifying a Suitable Career Goal

Tourism career goals vary from traveling agent, and tourist guide to hotel
management(WTO, 2020). I will adopt the profession of tourist guide as my career as
it matches my personality.

4.5 Adapting to Industry Trends and Changes:

According to Cooper, Fletcher, Gilbert, and Wanhill (2018), Success in the tourism
industry requires adapting to these trends and changes in digital skills, sustainable
practices, and a continuous learning approach through industry events.

5. Action Plan to Become a Tourist Guide :

An action plan helps an individual prioritize and make informed decisions in a career
journey and it has different steps.

5.1 Step 1: Self-Assessment

Strong Base leads toward a successful career plan so understanding personality,


passion, and skills will help in building a strong foundation.
5.1.1 Personality test:

Skills such as Communication, patience, and enthusiasm are most important for a
tourist guide (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, MBTI) and these skills are my
personality traits.

5.1.2 Passion Survey:

My interests and hobbies are related to travel, history, culture, and geography which
are core requirements of a good tourist guide.

5.1.3 Knowledge of other languages:

Knowing different languages is a precious asset for a tourist guide and I know
different languages.

5.2 Step 2: Setting Goals

Setting goals, long or short gives a path and motivation.

5.2.1 Long-Term Goal:

My ultimate career aspiration is to become a certified tour guide in different regions


of the world, leading specialized tours and starting my own tour company.

5.2.2 Short-Term Goals:

To achieve a long-term goal break down your long-term goal into small and feasible
steps. For example, I have to take part in relevant training programs to become a
certified tourist, gain experience by working on a specialized tour, networking within
the industry, and save money to start my own company.

6.1 Step3:Skills and knowledge gaps as a tourist guide

6.1.1 Skills

Essential skills for a tourist guide are:


Communication skills, language proficiency, Customer care, problem-solving, Time
management, Navigation skills, Knowledge of History and Culture, and Storytelling.

6.1.2 Knowledge gaps:

Some areas where I am not more knowledgeable as a tourist guide are:


Local laws and regulations, Emergency procedures, Local customs, and tour logistics
of different regions.

7. Develop Strategies

7.1 Step4:Strategies

To become an efficient and effective tourist guide I must develop strategies for
essential skills and overcome my knowledge gaps. I would consider the following
strategies:

7.1.1 Certifications:

To enhance my integrity, pursuing relevant certifications such as the International


Tour Management Institute (ITMI) certification will help me.

7.1.2 Language Courses:

To improve my language skills, I will take different language courses or language


immersion programs (XU, 2020).
7.1.3 Networking:

To build more relevant connections in the industry, I will join professional


organizations like the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations (WFTGA) and
regularly attend industrial events.

7.1.4 Internships and Volunteer Work:

I will gain practical experience by interning with well-established tour companies or


volunteering as a guide.

7.1.5 Research:

I would spend more time searching to gain more knowledge about local laws,
customs, traditions, emergency procedures, and tour logistics of different regions.

8. Creating an Action Plan

To achieve my goals, it is important to have a well-structured action plan in place.


This involves breaking down our objectives into short-term, intermediate, and long-
term plans, each with specific steps and timelines.

8.1 Short term Action Plans:

For my short-term plans, I consider enrolling myself in a public speaking course or


volunteering with a tour company to gain practical experience.

8.2 Intermediate Action Plans:

For my intermediate plans, I would like to obtain an ITMI certificate, interning at


leading tour operators, and attending industrial conferences these can provide me with
valuable knowledge and connections.
8.3 Long term action plan:

In the long run, I will complete my degree and gain relevant work experience which
can position me for supervision roles in established tourism companies or even enable
me to start my agency.

9. Implementation of the action plan:

9.1 Short-Term Goals (1-2 Years):

9.1.1 Goal 1:

Enhancing Communication Skills


Timeline: Complete a Communication skill course by Jan, 2024.
Action Steps: First of all I researched onsite or online courses. I enrolled myself in a
2-month duration course. I dedicated my precious time to practicing and gasp these
speaking skills.

9.1.2 Goal 2:

Practical Work
Timeline: Started to volunteer as an assistant guide by Feb, 2024.
Action Steps: I identified local tour-related organizations that were providing
volunteering chances. I applied and showed my passion for learning. I also committed
to the organization on a regular schedule and actively engaged myself with the
tourists.

9.2. Intermediate Goals (2-5 Years):

9.2.1 Goal 1: Achieve Certification in ITMI

Timeline: Complete the program by March, 2026.


Action Steps: I registered myself in the certification program of the International Tour
Management Institute (ITMI). I successfully attended all essential courses and passed
their exams and also followed mentorship from well-experienced guides.

9.2.2 Goal 2: Internships

Timeline: Applying for internships with leading tour operators by Oct, 2026.
Action Steps: I looked for well-known tour operators in my different desired regions.
I also prepared an attractive resume and cover letter and submitted applications,
highlighting my skills and passion for tour guides.

9.2.3 Goal 3: Networking

Timeline: Regularly Attend industrial seminars, conferences, meetups, and events


thrice a year, starting by Nov, 2026.
Action Steps: I kept myself updated with upcoming conferences, seminars,
workshops, meetups, and trade shows where networking opportunities were available.
I registered and planned my attendance, got in touch with industry professionals, and
exchanged contact information.

9.3 Long-Term Goals (5+ Years):

9.3.1 Goal 1: Completion of Degree and Gain Experience,

Timeline:
Completion of my degree and have a minimum of 5 years of industry experience.
Action Steps:
I completed my tourism degree program and sought several opportunities for
employment as a tourist guide to gain experience and continuously update my
information about local history and culture

9.3.2 Goal 2: Analyzing particular tours

Timeline: Start looking for chances to lead particular tours by Dec, 2026.
Action Steps: I looked for particular tour niches (e.g., historical, culinary, adventure)
and built my expertise in these niches through extra pieces of training and self-study. I
also created marketing materials that efficiently presented my specialized knowledge.

9.3.3 Goal 3:Starting My OwnTour Company

Timeline: Negotiated the feasibility of opening my own tour company after 6 years of
experience.
Action Steps: I executed a detailed business feasibility report, made an effective and
efficient business plan, and included financial projections. I also obtained essential
licenses and permits and opened my own traveling company.

Always kept in my mind that the key to the successful implementation of any career
plan is dedication and persistence. I checked my growth daily against the timelines,
made changes to the plan where needed, and stayed committed to my career by
acquiring the latest knowledge and skills.
