MEASURE OF VARIABILITY – The Range, IQR, MAD, Variance and Standard Deviation

 Variability refers to how “spread out” a group of scores is.

 The terms variability, spread, and dispersion are synonyms, and refer to how spread
out a distribution is.

These are five frequently used measures of variability:

1. The Range
2. Interquartile Range (IQR)
3. Mean Absolute Deviation
4. Variance
5. Standard Deviation

 A low value tends to clustered tightly around the center.

 A high value signifies that they tend to full further away.

1. The Range
- It is the simplest measure of variability.
- It is simply the highest score minus the lowest score.

2. Interquartile Range (IQR)

- It is the range of the middle 50% of the scores in a distribution.

IQR = 3RD Quartile – 1st Quartile

IQR = Q3 – Q1
3. Mean Absolute Deviation
- It is the average distance between each data point and the mean.

4 & 5. Variance and Standard Deviation

- It is defined as the average squared difference of the scores from the mean.
(Variance)
- It is defined as the average distance of the scores from the mean.
(Standard Deviation)

For the following groups of numbers, calculate the range, IQR, MAD, Variance and Standard
Deviation.

 Range

Example: 10, 6, 7, 8, 11, 9, 14, 8

6, 7, 8, 8, 9, 19, 11, 14

a. Range:
R = 14 – 6
R=8

b. Inter Quartile Range:

IQR = 10.5 – 7.5
IQR = 3

 MAD
Example: 10, 6, 7, 8, 11, 9, 14, 8
