• The first Men’s World Cup was held in 1930 and

was won by Uruguay. Since then, it has been
held every four years. The Men’s World Cup
didn’t take place during the Second World war.

• The most successful team in the competition’s

history is Brazil who have won an amazing
five times!

Good news for fans of football. With only a

month to wait, the countdown to the 2022
men’s football World Cup is on.
The competition, which takes place every four
years, will be hosted in Qatar. This will be the
22nd Men’s World Cup competition.
The competition usually takes place
during the summer when the club football
season is over.
Due to the extreme heat in Qatar in the
summer, this year’s competition is taking place
in winter.
The first game takes place on 20th November
when hosts Qatar take on Ecuador.
32 nations will be battling it out to win the
competition.
Each nation has been put into a group with
three other teams. Then, they all play each other.
The winners and runners-up of each group go on
to play in a knockout competition of 16 teams.
This will be followed by the quarter and semi-
finals. When there are only two teams left in
the competition, they will face each other in the
final. This will take place on 18th December in
Doha, the county’s capital city.
England will play their first match against
Iran on 21st November.
Wales’ first game will also be on 21st
November. They will face the USA.

As England and Wales are in the same group,
they will play each other on 29th November.
It is too early to suggest who will win the
2022 Men’s World Cup. However, the current
five top-ranked teams according to FIFA are
Brazil, Belgium, Argentina, France and England.
The last time the competition was played, in
2018, France won by defeating Croatia in the
final. Perhaps they could do it again and defend
their title?
Or maybe there could be a complete surprise!
