SUBJECT EARTH AND LIFE SCIENCE
TOPIC Earth an Earth Subsystem
REFERENCE Bayo-ang,Roly B., et.al. Earth and Life Science for Senior High School
(Grade11).Educational Resources Corporation Quezon City. 2016
WEEK 5 DAY

OBJECTIVES 1. Recognize the earth as a system composed of the system; and

2. Identify how the earth’s system interacts to each other.
CONCEPTS
Earth is Characterized by its blue waters, rocky brown and green land masses with
white clouds set against a black ground.

Earth is made up of erratic, complex and interactive systems that make it a constantly
changing planet.

The biophysical components of the Earth System are often referred to as spheres and
are subdivided into four: geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere. These
four regulate the different functions on Earth.

Biospheres
- Includes all life forms on earth

-It covers all ecosystems- from the soil to the rainforest, from mangroves to
coral reefs, and from the plankton-rich ocean surface to the deep sea
Hydrosphere
- Dynamic mass of the water that is continuously on the move

- About 70% of the earth is covered with liquid water and much of it is the form
of ocean water

-
Only 3% of the earth’s water is fresh: two- thirds are in the form of ice, and the
remaining one-third is present in streams, lakes, and groundwater
Atmosphere
- It is the thin gaseous layer that envelopes the lithosphere

- The present atmosphere is composed of 78% nitrogen N, 21 % oxygen (O2),

0.9% argon, and trace amount of the other gases.
Geosphere
- Makes up the solid portion of the earth, its structure and land.
- includes everything natural and lifeless that make up the surface of the earth.
Examples are all the rocks and sand particles from dry land to those found at the
bottom of the oceans.
They also include the mountains, minerals, lava and molten magma from beneath the
earth's crust. And that is the subsystem of the earth--- question?
How the earth subsystem interacts to each other?
There are many ways how subsystem interacts but the most common scenario is
The atmosphere provides the geosphere with heat and energy needed for rock
breakdown and erosion. The geosphere, in turn, reflects the sun's energy back into
the atmosphere and The biosphere receives gases, heat, and sunlight (energy) from
the atmosphere.

QUESTIONS/ACTIVITY Activity: Earth Subsystem
“Connect the Spheres: Earth’s Systems Interaction”
Guiding Question:
- What “Systems” are found on Earth?
- How do Earth’s Systems interact?
Engage – Based on the following places, find and observe the interactions
of each subsystem.
Place Observation
1. Taal Lake -Taal lake is an example of hydrosphere, and
geosphere. Why? Because before it became a lake, it
was a volcano which is an example of geosphere, and
now that it contains lake on its center, and water is
surrounding volcanoes as usual, means that it is also an
example of hydrosphere.

2. Mt. Pulag -Mt. Pulag is an example of geosphere. Why? Because

geosphere includes all the rocks that make up Earth,
from the partially melted rock under the crust, to
ancient, towering mountains, to grains of sand on a
beach.

3. Ocean Park -Ocean park is an example of hydrosphere and

biosphere. Why? Because it does not only contain mass
of water but it also contains living things like fishes and
coral reefs on it.

4. Manfort Bat Cave, Samal -This cave is an example of

Island

Explain: After seeing many examples, what conclusions about Earth’s

System can you make?
