Solar Eclipse

April 2, 2024

From: Leanne Bennett, Academic Dean

The last time a total solar eclipse was visible from Montreal occurred in
1932; after this year’s eclipse, the next one to occur in the province will be
in 2106 but only in 2205 in Montreal. The total solar eclipse that will take
place on 8 April 2024 will be, for most people, a once-in-a-lifetime event.

The eclipse will begin at 2:14 p.m., reach totality at 3:26 p.m. when the
moon aligns perfectly between the earth and the sun for a brief couple of
minutes, and end at 4:36 p.m.

Given the special and rare nature of this event, your teachers have been
encouraged to be flexible with students. However, given the nature of
some learning activities, your teachers may not be in a position to make
accommodations. If you are interested in viewing the eclipse, please ask
your teachers about their expectations for the time of the eclipse.

If you would like to view the eclipse, the Physics Department and Campus
Life will be giving out about 2,000 solar eclipse glasses on a first-come,
first-served basis to students and employees beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the
Upper Atrium on 8 April.
