Feasibility Report of a Power Conservation System,

controlled by Arduino and equipped with a PIR Motion

Sensor, for lighting solutions and Image Capture
functionality.

Problem Statement
The proposed project seeks to address the issue of energy wastage in lighting systems.
Traditional lights are often left on for extended periods, no movement in the area, leading to
unnecessary energy consumption. Additionally, there is a lack of visual evidence in case of any
unexpected movement in the monitored area .Given that CCTV cameras operate continuously
and consume a significant amount of power, they are not a cost-effective solution for many
people.

Project Goals and Activities

The primary goal of the project is to design and implement a power-efficient light
control system using Arduino, integrated with a photo capture device. The activities
involved will include:

1. Procurement of necessary hardware components such as :

● Arduino: Arduino is an open-source electronic prototyping platform that enables

users to create interactive electronic objects. In the context of a PIR motion
detector, it can be used as the main controller that interfaces with the PIR sensor
and triggers actions based on the sensor’s output.
● PIR Motion Sensor: A Passive Infrared Sensor (PIR sensor) is an electronic
sensor that measures infrared (IR) light radiating from objects in its field of view.
It’s often used to detect whether a human has moved in or out of the sensor’s
range. In our circuit, it would be used to detect motion and send a signal to the
Arduino.
● Micro SD Card: Micro SD cards are small, inexpensive, low-power, and easy to
use storage devices. They can be used in our circuit to store images captured
when motion is detected. The Arduino can write the image data onto the Micro
SD card for later retrieval and analysis.
● ESP32-CAM: The ESP32-CAM is a small camera module with an ESP32-S chip
that also provides support for a microSD card slot. It’s ideal for video projects like
surveillance cameras or motion detection systems. In our circuit, it could be used
to capture images when the PIR sensor detects motion. The images could then
be stored on the Micro SD card for later viewing.

In summary, when motion is detected by the PIR sensor, it sends a signal to the Arduino.
The Arduino then triggers the ESP32-CAM to capture an image. This image is then
stored on the Micro SD card for later retrieval and analysis. This makes for a simple yet
effective motion detection and image capture system.

2. Designing and implementing the circuitry to integrate these components.

3. Programming the Arduino to control the street lights based on detected
movement and capturing a photo when motion is detected.
4. Testing and refining the system for optimal performance.

Expected Impact
The expected impact of this project is significant energy savings in lighting systems. By ensuring
that lights are only on when needed (i.e. when there’s movement in the area), we can greatly
reduce energy consumption. This not only leads to cost savings but also contributes to
environmental sustainability..Motion-activated cameras on streets not only bolster security by
recording potential unlawful activities, but their energy efficiency also makes them a more viable
option for a wider range of people

Budget and Timeline

The estimated cost of the project can vary depending on the specific components used and their
prices at the time of purchase. Here’s a rough estimate:

● Arduino: 2,000 PKR

● Resistors: 10(2) PKR
● PIR Motion Sensor: 800 PKR
● ESP32: 1,800PKR
● Micro SD card: 500 PKR

So, the total estimated cost would be around 5,120 PKR

Regarding the project timeline, it is estimated that the circuit design and Arduino programming
could span a period of about 2 weeks. The subsequent testing and implementation phase could
require roughly 3 weeks. Hence, the entire project is projected to reach completion in a span of
approximately 5 weeks.
