The Baker Slow Set Power Charge, Product
No. 437-66 is a slow burning power charge for use
in the Baker Model E-4 and E-5 Wireline Pressure
Setting Assembly (WLPSA). The Slow Set Power
Charge will slow down the setting speed of most
packers and bridge plugs under most conditions.
This usually increases the reliability of the packing
element seal and the bite of the slips.
The Baker Standard Power Charge, Product
No. 437-64 provides an economical power source
for the Model E-4 WLPSA. This power charge can
be used to set simple tools in non-severe well con-
ditions.
A Baker Model “BP-3S” Igniter, Product No.
437-44 will fire when a sufficient electrical current
is passed through it. The Baker Secondary Igniter,
Product No. 437-43 is ignited when the Igniter fires
and is blown down on top of the power charge. As
the secondary burns, it provides heat input to light
the power charge. The Baker Model “BP-4S” Ignit-
contains a resistor which requires a higher electri-
cal voltage to establish a current sufficient to fire
the Igniter. The “BP-4S” is slightly longer for iden-
tification purposes.
Operation
Selection Guidelines
The following guidelines should be used when
choosing power charges and igniters for all sizes
of Baker Model E-4 Wireline Pressure Setting As-
semblies (WLPSA) and the Size 05 Model E-5
WLPSA.
Ignitors:
437-44-2200 BP-3S Low voltage igniter in all sizes
of E-4 and the Size 05 E-5 WLPSA.
437-44-4200 BP-4S also fits all sizes of E-4 and
the Size 05 E-5 WLPSA. This igniter meets API
RP67, which requires igniters and other initiating
devices to incorporate features that reduce the risk
of accidental ignition due to Radio Frequency In-
duced (RFI) or other stray currents.

*The Slow-Set Power Charge is recommended for setting all tools under all conditions and is required under severe conditions. The Standard
Power Charge is more economical and will function satisfactorily under moderate conditions. Also, do not use a Standard Power Charge to set
complex tools with a large number of moving parts like the Wireline Set Retrievable Bridge Plug or Packers with seal bore or millout extensions
that weigh more than 500 lbs (30 lbs on Size 05).
EXAMPLE: You want to run a Baker size 84-32 Model D packer with 5,000 psi hydrostatic and 160oF at setting depth. The chart above indicates
that a standard power charge is acceptable for this applications.It you were to add a 20’ sealbore extension, a Slow-Set power charge would be
required due to the added weight. Note: The 05 Slow Set Power Charge is only available for the E-S Setting Tool which may not be available in
all areas. The Std 05 Power Charge may be run in the E-4 Setting Tool under more severe conditions. An E5 Tool with slow set charge will
increase reliability; where it is available.

NOTE: All Sizes 212-XX to 240-XX packers must be run
and set on a Hydraulic or Model L Setting Tool in order
to completely set the tool.
The oil level requirement in the E-4 remains un-
changed regardless of power charge selection.
Refer to the table below to determine the proper oil
level for your application. Check the oil level on lo-
cation just prior to each run.
• Too little oil shortens the setting stroke and
reduces the force available to set the intended
tool.
• Too much oil may damage the E-4 or E-5
WLPSA and prematurely start the setting
process.
All Baker WLPSA’s, power charges, and ignit-
ers were designed and tested to run and set Baker
products. If they are used to run and set another
manufacturer’s products, it is that manufacturer’s
responsibility to check the compatibility of their
products with the Baker WLPSA being used.
Shelf Life And Storage
The recommended shelf life for power charges
is 5 years. This does not mean that a power charge
that is more than 5 years old cannot be run. Inven-
tory levels should be maintained and rotated so
that you will not have power charges on hand that
are more than 5 years old. Baker will not accept re-
turn of power charges that are approaching or are
more than 5 years old.
All Power Charges and Igniters should be
stored in a cool, dry place. Exposure to excessive
heat will reduce shelf life and should be avoided.
The tool box of a truck is not a good storage place
for Power Charges or Igniters. Exposure to mois-
ture will degrade the performance of Power Charg-
es and Igniters. Do not use Primary or Secondary
Igniters that have been opened for extended peri-
ods.

Local laws and codes will dictate how and
where these items can be stored. Many places re-
quire special magazines or bunkers for the storage
of any items classified as explosives. It is your re-
sponsibility to conform to these regulations. Each
item has a UN number, an EX number and a DOT
classification number. These numbers are usually
printed or stamped on the shipping containers. Lo-
cal regulations will usually use these numbers to
determine storage requirements. For this reason,
try to keep all items in their original shipping con-
tainer whenever possible.
Information for United States ONLY. The Fed-
eral Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has
stated that all Baker Igniters and Power Charges
currently in production are not considered Ammu-
nition or weapons that fall under their jurisdiction.
Transportation
All domestic transportation of the above items
is regulated by the United States Department of
Transportation as Hazardous Materials. There are
specific packaging, labeling and documentation re-
quirements that must be met whenever shipping
these items; either by common carrier or in compa-
ny vehicles. The regulations are rigorous and
change periodically. Transportation of Hazardous
Materials may only be undertaken by persons who
have received DOT training. Failure to comply with
DOT requirements may result in serious legal and
economic repercussions for you and your compa-
ny.
Some general information on the shipping of
Hazardous Materials is contained below. This in-
formation is not complete and must not be used as
a substitute for current federal laws and regula-
tions. If questions arise, Baker Districts should

customers should consult their own company
transportation and safety departments for advice
on current shipping regulations.
NOTE: Baker employees are not qualified to,
and shall not, give advice on shipping and stor-
age regulations to customers.
1. Containers: All Hazardous Materials must be in
a UN certified and approved container. This
container must have tested to UN packaging
requirements and display very specific labels.
As a practical matter, this usually means they
must be in the original shipping box with all la-
bels and markings intact.
2. Accompanying Paperwork: All items must be
accompanied by a Hazardous Material Bill of
Lading whether being shipped by a common
carrier or in a company vehicle. The Bill of Lad-
ing must be completed in accordance with reg-
ulations and contain several specific items.
Additional documents may be required.
3. When transporting these items on a helicopter
or workboat, provide a copy of the Bill of Lading
and other accompanying paperwork to the pilot

or captain. These items must be packaged in
proper shipping containers.
4. An MSDS and Competent Authority letter are
available from Baker Marketing Dept. at Navi-
gation. These may be distributed to any cus-
tomer, shipper or regulatory agency that
requests them.
NOTE: Transportation includes all transportation by
boat, aircraft, commercial truck or shipping
company, company owned vehicle or private
vehicle. The regulations apply to carrying one power
charge in your truck! YOU must comply with all
regulations as to packaging, labeling and
accompanying paperwork.
Shipping or transporting these items improperly
can cause serious legal and economic repercus-
sions for you and your company.
Disposal:
Excess, damaged, or out of date Power Charg-
es and Igniters must be disposed of according to
local regulations. Consult local fire, safety and en-
vironmental agencies. Baker is not licensed to and
cannot accept items for disposal.
