often pictured with sheaves of golden corn and was worshipped by all who sowed and reaped.
She had a very beautiful daughter named Persephone. One day,Hades, the God of the
underworld, saw her picking flowers. He was entranced by such a lovely woman and decided to
have her as her queen. He snatched her into his chariot and brought her to his kingdom.
Demeter was stricken with grief when she discovered her daughter was missing. Her sorrow
brought winter to the world.
Zeus, upon seeing her grief, sent Hermes down to Hades to bring
Persephone back. But Hermes was not able to bring back. He found her sitting beside Hades as
his queen.Unfortunately she had eaten pomegranate seeds making her held captive in the
sunless kingdom. Finally Hermes was able to persuade the King of the underworld,to let

seeds. So all through summer she returns to her mother who can smile and bless the crops and
when Persephone returns to the underworld, Demeter became sad again and the world
becamecold and wintry.
THE EYES
Tina was assigned to report about the different senses in her class but she has
been very curious about how the eyes work. What special parts does each eye possess? Tina
did a research and this is what she found.
Imagine a light that bounces off an object you have set your eyes on. This enters
your eyeball through a clear plastic covering called cornea. Then a light enters a black spot or
hole . This tiny hole is the pupil found in the center of the iris which is the colored circle in your
eyes. When it is dark, the muscles in the iris make the pupil larger and when it is bright the pupil
gets smaller. Then this light passes through the lens found behind the pupil then goes through
the inside of the eyes filled with clear liquid that seems like a jelly. As sson as it passes through
this area, the light touches the back of your eye called retina where tiny nerves are found. These
nerves interpret the light and send the message to a big nerve where the message travels to
your brain. The brain receives and understands the message. The brain then tells you what you
have seen. This wonderful work is a gift to us by God.Our eyes make us see the beauty and
wonder of the things around us. Without our eyes, our world will probably be a sad place to live
in. Let us show God how we appreciate the gift of sight by taking care of our eyes very well.

The new batch of soldiers marched into the plaza of Palawan. The men wore
tattered uniforms and were barefooted. They carried old and dirty rifles. The General
thought,”they certainly look our soldiers,”while watching them. He had to be careful because
the Americans wanted control of the islands. They had been trying to capture him for more
than a year now and knew that the American soldiers were close behind. He was glad that a
new batch of soldiers arrived to help. However, unknown to the General, they weren’t really his
soldiers. They were soldiers paid by the Americans, dressed like his own soldiers to fool him and
his men.

independence, but Aguinaldo’s soldier continued to fight against the Americans. On July
