3/ In American accents, the letter T is pronounced like a /d/ when it is between two
vowel sounds. So in America, writer /rɑɪtə/ sounds like rider /rɑɪdə/.
You will hear two pronunciations for each word. The first will have the /t/ sound and
the second the /d/ sound. Listen and repeat.

4/ Pronouncing –ed endings. The –ed ending is pronounced in one of three ways:
- -ed is pronounced /t/ when the verb ends in a voiceless consonant sound such
as /p/, /k/, /tʃ/, /f/, /ʃ/, /s/.
- -ed is pronounced /d/ when the verb ends in a vowel sound or a voiced consonant
sound such as /b/, /g/, /v/, /dʒ/, /l/, /m/, /n/, /z/, /w/, /j/.
- -ed is pronounced /ɪd/ when the verb ends with the sound /d/ or /t/.

4/ Pronouncing –s ending. The –s ending is pronounced in one of three ways:
- -s is pronounced /s/ when it follows the voiceless consonant sounds /p/, /t/, /k/, /f/,
and /θ/.
- -s is pronounced /z/ when it follows the voiced consonant sounds /b/, /d/, /g/, /v/,
/m/, /n/, /ŋ/, /l/, /d/, and vowel sounds.
- -s is pronounced /ɪz/ when it follows the sounds /s/, /ʃ/, /z/, /ʒ/, /tʃ/ and /dʒ/.
Notice that –s endings include noun plurals (for example, two cats), third person
singular verbs (He takes the train), possessives (Beth’s house), and the short form
of is or has (What’s her name? He’s already left.). They all follow the same
pronunciation rules.
Listen to these groups of words. In each group, all the words except one have the
same pronunciation at the end. Choose the odd one out in each group. Remember
to focus on the sound of the –s ending, not the spelling. [audio 13-4]
