Grade 11 Am/IB – Q1 Chemistry Report Comments

Advanced The student is a conscientious and hard-working learner and has put in a steady performance throughout the first
Level: (95- quarter. The first quarter examination demonstrated that the student has uncovered the current understanding
100) about the states of matter and how structure affects its properties and behavior and also gained astounding ideas
Level 7 about the atom, its structure and developed understanding of what an atom is.
Her/his exam paper showed no major areas of weakness. She/He contributes well in lessons and is happy to apply
her/his understanding of particular nature of matter to model and interpret data based questions.
She/He is punctual and properly equipped for lessons, this ensures that she/he is prepared to learn.
She/He has completed the homework tasks set for every cycle and is developing a pleasing ability to analyze and
answer examination questions and higher critical thinking levels of questions.
This practicing of exam questions is a vital part of the consolidation process.
The student should continue to work in this pleasing manner and endeavor to score good marks in the assessments
and ask questions to develop her/his own systematic approaches to problem-solving.
Through experimental investigations, data analysis, and interpretation, the student will learn to think critically,
analyze information, and draw valid conclusions, in various fields of chemistry.

Proficient We have been working on uncovering the current understanding about the states of matter and how structure
Level: (90- affects its properties and behavior throughout the first quarter. The student seems to enjoy this topic and has
94) made very pleasing progress. The recent examination showed that the student has gained an
Level 6 adequate understanding about the states of matter and how structure affects its properties and behavior and gained
ideas about the atom, its structure and developed understanding of what an atom is. So far, her paper showed some
areas of weakness which need to be carefully considered, such as applications and skills in modeling and interpreting
data-based questions. This practicing of exam questions is a vital part of the consolidation process. The
student should continue to work in this pleasing manner and endeavor to score good marks in the assessments and
ask questions to develop her understanding in different fields of chemistry. The student is showing signs of
improvement in chemistry, I hope this trend continues.

Basic Level: The student has started chemistry in quarter 1 with an average set of results, so far, and a lackluster attitude. She/He is
85-89 reluctant to contribute during the in-class discussions, but when she/he does, she/he shows a moderately reasonable
Level 5 grasp of how the states of matter and how structure affects its properties and behavior. She/He is frequently late for
lessons and this must have an impact on her/his learning. The student has completed the homework tasks set, but often
leaves gaps and is missing an opportunity to consolidate applications and skills learned, such as modeling and
interpreting data-based questions. The student should look carefully at the errors she/he made in the examination and
try to complete any homework tasks to the best of her/his ability. She/He should try to take a more active approach in
lessons and improve her/his level of concentration.

Intermediate The student displays limited knowledge of modeling the particular nature of matter and shows a partial understanding
Level: of basic concepts and principles concerned with how the states of matter and how structure affects its properties and
80-84 behavior. He/She shows a weak ability to utilize critical thinking in interpreting data-based questions. The student shows
Level 4 some ability to manipulate data and solve basic or routine problems. He/She communicates with a lack of clarity and
some repetitive or irrelevant material. The student has struggled with some of what we have studied. She/He will
require much more focused study time to make a positive impact upon results.

Emerging The student displays little subject knowledge on the particular nature of matter and shows weak understanding of
Level: Below basic concepts and principles, and little evidence of application modeling and interpreting data. The student exhibits
80 minimal ability to manipulate data and little or no ability to solve problems. He/She offers responses which are often
Level 3 -2 incomplete or irrelevant during examination. The student needs to realize that homework assignments are important
and be prepared to give these more time and attention.
