ESA has 22 members, The members countries of ESA include Austria, Belgium, Czech
Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the
Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
ESA Headquarters are located in Paris, France, ESA boasts a staff of more than 2,000 and
operates with an annual budget of approximately €4.43 billion.
Human spaceflight :
ESA collaborates with international partners on human space missions, including its
participation in the International Space Station (ISS) program, where European astronauts
like Thomas Pesquet contribute to scientific research and technological advancements.
Earth observation :
ESA operates a fleet of Earth observation satellites, gathering crucial data to monitor
environmental changes, manage natural resources, and support disaster response efforts.
This includes missions like the Copernicus Sentinel series, which provides vital information
on climate change, land use, and atmospheric composition.
Spaceport management :
ESA manages the Guiana Space Centre located in Kourou, French Guiana. This spaceport
serves as a primary launch facility for ESA's missions, as well as commercial satellite
launches through partnerships with Arianespace.
7 years from 1996 until its last flight on July 5, 2023. The Ariane 6 rocket will replace it
starting in 2024.
ESA has carried out a number of remarkable missions, including the following.
Mars Express
Launched in 2003, Mars Express is an orbiter mission designed to study the Martian surface,
atmosphere, and subsurface. It has provided detailed images of the Martian landscape,
detected water ice in polar regions, and analyzed the planet's atmosphere, shedding light on
its evolution and potential habitability
Rosetta
Launched in 2004, Rosetta is perhaps one of ESA's most famous missions. It involved a
spacecraft rendezvousing with comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in 2014 and deploying
a lander called Philae to its surface. Rosetta studied the comet's composition, structure, and
activity, providing invaluable insights into the early solar system and the origins of water on
Earth
BepiColombo
Launched in 2018, BepiColombo is a joint mission between ESA and the Japan Aerospace
Exploration Agency (JAXA) to Mercury. Consisting of two spacecraft - the Mercury Planetary
Orbiter (MPO) and the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (MMO) - BepiColombo aims to study
Mercury's surface, magnetic field, and exosphere in unprecedented detail to understand the
planet's composition, geology, and evolution.
Gaia
Launched in 2013, Gaia is a space observatory tasked with mapping the positions,
distances, and motions of over a billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy. By creating a detailed
3D map of our galaxy, Gaia aims to unravel its structure, formation, and evolution, as well as
shed light on the distribution of dark matter throughout the cosmos.
END
These missions represent just a fraction of ESA's diverse portfolio, which also includes
missions to study the Sun, explore the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, investigate cosmic
phenomena such as black holes and gravitational waves, and advance technologies for
space exploration and utilization.
