Lack of vocabulary

Vocabulary is an important foundation in developing speaking skills.Without vocabulary,

we cannot express our thoughts. So when learners have a restricted vocabulary it can lead to
frustration and hinder their ability to communicate effectively. In"Vocabulary in Language
Teaching" Norbert Schmitt (2000) point out that “Vocabulary learning is an imperative part
of learning a foreign language.” As David A. Wilkins (1972) has argued in his opinions
about a shortage of vocabulary in speaking, "Without grammar, our sentences may lack
coherence and precision. Yet, without vocabulary, we are left with mere fragments, unable
to convey any substantive meaning". Rie Koizumi (2013) also asserted in an article that
among the five key factors, including accent, comprehension, fluency, grammar, and
vocabulary, vocabulary stood out as the primary determinant of proficiency disparities
between novice and intermediate learners. Furthermore, Koizumi noted that even among
learners at intermediate levels and beyond, vocabulary remained a crucial discriminatory
factor alongside the other elements. In essence, vocabulary serves as the very foundation
upon which our spoken language is built. In the absence of a rich vocabulary, our ability to
communicate effectively would be greatly hindered, leaving us struggling to convey even
the simplest of messages. Therefore, it is clear that lack of vocabulary is the factor that
causes the most difficulties for speaking learners.
