I. Let f (x, y) = exy − y and let P (0, 2).

1. Find the greatest rate of increase of f at P .

2. Determine the rate of change of f at P along ~v = h3, −4i.
3. Give a direction at which the rate of change of f is zero.

II. Find an equation of the tangent plane to the surface defined by sin(x − z 2 ) + y ln(2x − y) = 0
at the point (1, 1, −1).

III. Find all critical points of g(x, y) = 4 − 3y 2 + 6xy − 2x3 and determine what occurs at each
critical point using the Second Derivatives Test.

IV. Consider the function f (x, y) = x2 + y 2 and the ellipse 2(x − 1)2 + y 2 = 8.

1. Use the method of Lagrange multiplier to determine the absolute maximum and absolute
minimum values of f on the ellipse.
2. Determine the absolute maximum and absolute minimum values of f on the region en-
closed by the ellipse.

VI. Use polar coordinates to find the volume of the osolid under the surface z = 3x above the
n √
region R = (x, y) | 0 ≤ y ≤ 4 − x2 , 1 ≤ x ≤ 2 .

VII. Let S be the portion of the surface with vector equation R(u, v) = hu + v, uv, u − vi, where
(u, v) satisfies 0 ≤ u2 + v 2 ≤ 4.

1. Find the equation of the tangent plane to S at the point where u = 1 and v = −1.
2. Determine the area of S.
