TUTORIAL – 1

1. Solve the following equations by using LU decomposition method

3x+2y+7z = 4; 2x+3y+z = 5; 3x+4y+z = 7
2. A firm can produce three types of cloths A, B and C. Three kinds of wool are required for
it, say red, green and blue wool. One unit of type ‘A’ cloth needs 2 yards of red wool, 8
yards of green and one yard of blue wool; one unit length of type ‘B’ cloth needs one
yard of red, 3 yards of green and 5 yards of blue wool; one unit length of type ‘C’ cloth
needs 6 yards red, 2 yards of green and one yard of blue wool. The firm has only a stock
of 9 yards red, 13 yards green and 7 yards of blue wool. Apply Lu Decomposition method
to determine the number of units of cloth A, B and C if total stock is used.
3. A gas station sells three types of gas: Regular for $2.80 a gallon, performance plus for
$3.00 a gallon and premium for $3.20 a gallon on a particular day 3900 gallons of gas
were sold for a total of $11,460. Two times as many gallons of Regular as premium gas
were sold. Use Factorization method to determine how number of gallons of each type of
gas were sold that day.
4. Expand 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = 𝑥 𝑦 in powers of (𝑥 − 1) and (𝑦 − 1) by applying Taylor’s series.
5. Apply Taylor’s series to expand f (x, y) =x3+2xy+y3 in powers of (x+1) and (y+2).
6. Expand f ( x, y ) = sin x cos y in powers of ‘x’ and ‘y’ up to the terms of second
degree.
7. Expand 𝑒 2𝑦 𝑙𝑜𝑔 𝑥in powers of ( x − 1) and y up to terms of second degree.
8. The profit obtained by producing x units of product A and y units of product B

approximately modelled by P ( x, y ) = 8 x + 10 y − 0.001( x 2 + xy + y 2 ) .Estimate the

production level that produces a maximum profit.
9. The sum of three numbers is constant. Prove that their product is maximum when they
are equal.

𝑚𝑦 + 𝑛𝑧 = 𝑝
