Activity Title: FINDING ARITHMETIC MEANS
Learning Competency: Determines arithmetic means and nth term of an Arithmetic Sequence
Learning Target/s: 1. Find the arithmetic means of an arithmetic sequence.
Reference/s: Intermediate Algebra
Author: Soledad Jose-Dilao

Concept Notes
Arithmetic Means are the terms between two consecutive terms of an arithmetic sequence.
In arithmetic sequence 2, 4, 6, 8…the middle term is called arithmetic mean.
4 is the arithmetic mean between 2 and 6
6 is the arithmetic mean between 4 and 8
4 and 6 are the arithmetic mean between 2 and 8

Example: Insert three arithmetic means between 3 and 23.

Solution 1 (find the common difference): Solution 2(find the three arithmetic means):
a1 = 3; a5 = 23; n = 5; d=?
a1=3; n=2; d=5 a1=3; n=3; d=5 a1=3; n=4; d=5
an = a1 + (n-1) d an = a1 + (n-1)d an = a1 + (n-1)d an = a1 + (n-1)d
23 = 3 + (5-1) d a2 = 3 + (2-1)5 a3 = 3 + (3-1)5 a4 = 3 + (4-1)5
23 = 3 + (4) d a2 = 3 + (1)5 a3 = 3 + (2)5 a4 = 3 + (3)5
23 = 3 + 4d a2 = 3 + 5 a3 = 3 + 10 a4 = 3 + 15
23 – 3 = 4d a2= 8 a3= 13 a4= 18
20 = 4d
20 4 d
4
= 4  Therefore, the three arithmetic means between 3 and 23 are
5=d 8, 13 and 18.

Exercises
Directions: Insert the indicated number of arithmetic means between the given first and last terms of an arithmetic sequence.
