LESSON 2: Solving Quadratic Equations

OBJECTIVES: Solves quadratic equations by: M9AL-la-b-1

a) Extracting Square Roots
MATERIALS: Books, Self-Learning Module, Laptop
REFERENCES:

House, Inc. 2018

Introduction:
Start Lesson 1.2 of this module by assessing your knowledge of the different
mathematics concepts previously studied and your skills in performing
mathematical operations. These knowledge and skills will help you in solving
quadratic equations by extracting square roots. As you go through this lesson,
think of this important question: “How does finding solutions of quadratic
equations facilitate in solving real-life problems and in making decisions?” To find
the answer, perform each activity. If you find any difficulty in answering the
exercises, seek the assistance of your teacher or peers or refer to the modules
you have gone over earlier. You may check your answers with your teacher.

Motivation/Drill:
1. What equation is needed to solve the unknown? Solve this equation
A carpenter has 729 square
using trial-and-error method. Explain your solution.
paving tiles to cover a square
conference room. Each tile is
one square foot. Find the
number of paving tiles in each
side of the room.

DISCUSSION/CONCEPTS:
EXTRACTING SQUARE ROOTS

Square Root Property

If x 2=n, and n> 0, then x=√ n or x=− √n

Square Root Property involves taking the square roots of both sides of quadratic equation.
This is applied when the term containing the second degree term with 1’ as its numerical coefficient is
isolated.

Example 1.

Solve the equation x 2−25=0

Solution
x 2−25=0
x 2=25 25 is added to both sides
x=± √ 25 Square Root Property is applied
x=± 5 The square root is simplified.
To check:

If x=5 If x=−5
2 2
5 −25=0 (−5) −25=0
25−25=0 25−25=0
0=0 True 0=0 True

Therefore, the solutions are 5 and -5.

Example 2.

Solve the equation x 2−11=0

Solution
x 2−11=0
x 2=11
x=± √ 11
x=± 5
To check:

If x=√ 11 If x=− √11

2 2
( √ 11) −11=0 (−√ 11) −11=0
11−11=0 11−11=0
0=0 True 0=0 True

Therefore, the solutions are √ 11and −√ 11.

Example 3.

Solve the equation 2 x2 +3=39

Solution
2 x2 +3=39
2 x2 =36 Subtracting 3 from both sides
x 2=18 Dividing both sides by 2
x=± √ 18 Using the Square Root Property
x=± √(9)(2)
x=± √ 9 ∙ √ 2
x=± 3 √ 2 Simplifying the Square Root

To check:

If x=3 √ 2 If x=−3 √ 2
2 2
2(3 √ 2) +3=39 2(−3 √ 2) +3=39
2 [ (9)(2) ] + 3=39 2 [ (9)(2) ] + 3=39
2 ( 18 ) +3=39 2 ( 18 ) +3=39
36+3=39 36+3=39
39=39 TRUE 39=39 True

Therefore, the solutions are 3 √ 2 and −3 √ 2.

ACTIVITY/EVALUATION:

Solve the following equations using the square root property in the given space.

1. 6 x 2−24=0 6. x 2−2=0
2. 7 x 2−63=0 7. 2 x2 −3=0
3. 2 x2 −34=0 8. x 2+ 4=0
4. 5 x 2−90=0 9. 3 x 2+5=0
5. 2 x2 −19=−1 10. x 2−8=0

Values Integration:
There are many ways to solve an equation regarding mathematics just like solving or own
personal problems, there are many to solve it so don’t lose hope and continue your life.
