Tensile Testing Submission Sheet

Name: Muhammad Amir Bin Mohamad Arif

Student No.: z5441371

Lab Demonstrator:

Date and time of lab 20 June 2023 (12:00pm – 1:00pm)

In this laboratory activity, you will complete a tensile test for two different samples of an
aluminium alloy, with the same composition but different heat treatments, as well as one
piece of steel. You will calculate and compare the mechanical properties of the three
materials.

Students are required to:

a. follow the operating instructions (DONE)
b. complete the following table (Summary of Results) and questions below
c. plot stress-strain graphs of the data collected during the experiment and include these
graphs with your report (DONE)
d. append calculations carried out
e. complete the front page
f. submit the report by the due date (within 1 week of lab attendance) online via the
submission link on Moodle. Reports must be typed (not handwritten and scanned).

Materials:
• Al 2024- T3: Solution heat treatment following hot working, quenching, cold
working, and being aged to a stable state
• Al 2024 annealed: The T3 condition has been removed through a heat treatment and
then furnace cooled
• Annealed steel

Summary of Results:
(Remember to include the appropriate UNITS)

Ultimate Tensile Strength 443.449305 MPa 0.19839694MPa 710.126286Mpa

Young’s Modulus

No handwritten answers will be marked. All answers must be

typed. Questions:
1. Why is the 0.2% Proof Stress commonly reported for aluminium instead of yield
strength?
2. A heat treatment (T3 process) resulting in precipitation strengthening has been applied to
the Al2024-T3 sample (you will learn about this strengthening process for aluminium
alloys later in the course). Would you expect differences in the microstructure of Al2024-
T3 compared with the Al2024 annealed sample? Explain why these two materials have a
similar Young’s modulus but different yield strengths.
3. Is the Young’s modulus of steel higher, lower or the same as that of the aluminium
samples? Explain the reasons for the difference in Young’s modulus of steel compared
with Al2024-T3.
4. Is this statement true or false?

“Young’s modulus is not directly related to yield strength”

Explain your reasoning based on the data measured and the atomic-scale processes that
determine a material’s Young’s modulus and yield strength.
