An ocean current is any more or less permanent or continuous, directed movement of ocean
water that flows in one of the Earth's oceans. The currents are generated from the forces acting upon
the water like the earth's rotation, the wind, the temperature and salinity differences and the
gravitation of the moon. Ocean waves are caused by wind moving across the surface of the water.
The friction between the air molecules and the water molecules causes energy to be transferred from
the wind to the water. This causes waves to form. What is a wave? In science, a wave is defined as a
transfer of energy. Waves are most commonly caused by wind. Wind-driven waves, or surface waves,
are created by the friction between wind and surface water. As wind blows across the surface of
the ocean or a lake, the continual disturbance creates a wave crest. The gravitational pull of the sun
and moon on the earth also causes waves. Waves located on the ocean's surface are commonly
caused by wind transferring its energy to the water, and big waves, or swells, can travel over long
distances. A wave's size depends on wind speed, wind duration, and the area over which the wind is
blowing (the fetch).
We need to study oceans movements, because it controls the Earth's weather as they heat
and cool, humidify and dry the air and control wind speed and direction. Long-term weather patterns
influence water supply, food supply, trade shipments, and property values. They can even foster the
growth of civilizations, or kill them off. Information from deep-ocean exploration can help predict
earthquakes and tsunamis and help us understand how we are affecting and being affected by
changes in Earth's environment. Ocean exploration can improve ocean literacy and inspire young
people to seek careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. An important part of
the circulation of heat and freshwater and other sea water constituents are ocean surface currents.
Their strength and variability play a role in weather and climate, impact environments for all life on
Earth.
They also focus on how the ocean interacts with Earth's atmosphere to produce our weather
and climate systems. As ocean waters warm, they also expand, which enhances sea level rise.
Geological Oceanography. Geological oceanographers study the past and present composition of
seafloor structures.
