A Species in Crisis

The leatherback turtles got their name because of their leather-like shell.
This is different from other turtles which mainly have hard shells. The leatherback turtles
are the largest sea turtle species.

These leatherback turtles can be found throughout the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
They have delicate, scissor-like jaws, therefore they feed mostly on jellyfish. Again, this is
different from the diet of other marine turtles, such as the olive ridley species, which
consists of crabs, molluscs, shrimps, jellyfish and vegetation.

The average weight of a leatherback is about 400 kg. Their average size is about 156.5 cm
The largest leatherback recorded was almost 305 cm from the tip of its beak to the tip of
its tail It weighed in at 916 kg. The leatherback turtles nest every 2-3 years. They lay an
average of 80 fertilised eggs which are the size of billiard balls and 30 smaller, unfertilised
eggs.

Even though the leatherback turtles' distribution is wide, during the last century their
numbers have seriously declined. This is due to intense egg collection and being caught by
fishermen According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN),
globally the leatherback status is listed as 'vulnerable. Meanwhile, in many
subpopulations such as in the Pacific and Southwest Atlantic, the turtles are 'critically
endangered.

We could do our part to help save the leatherback turtle population by raising public
awareness We could also help by donating to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and other
organisations that are helping to conserve their population.

Proud to be Malaysian

By Haikal Muhammad Amin

I am Haikal and I am proud to be Malaysian. The first thing that makes me proud of
this country is the variety of languages that are spoken by Malaysians. Most
Malaysians can speak Bahasa Melayu, the English language, as well as the various
Chinese and Indian dialects. For example, my parents speak fluent Bahasa Melayu and
English. In addition to that, my mother, who is from Penang, can also speak simple
Hokkien while my father can understand some Tamil.

Another thing that makes me feel glad to be a citizen of this country is the stability.
There is peace and harmony among the people. All the citizens live in unity, so the
country is peaceful and safe. Malaysians are often praised as peace loving people. I
also feel very blessed that Malaysia is free from natural disasters such as typhoons,
volcanoes and earthquakes.

Furthermore, since Malaysia is a multiracial country, I enjoy celebrating all the

different festivals and cultural celebrations such as Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese New
Year, Deepavali and Hari Gawai. During these auspicious occasions, the residents in my
neighbourhood hold open houses for friends to visit them. This is the best time to
sample the delicious traditional delicacies from each culture.

Finally, Malaysians take pride in celebrating important national events such as our
Independence Day celebrated on August 31, and Malaysia Day, celebrated on
September 16. During these special days, Malaysians are encouraged to take part in
activities as it fosters the Malaysian spirit.

Truly, I am proud to live in a country that has plenty of positive qualities. 7
