Lesson 2: Introduction and Objectiv es of Team Sports

Team Sports
Team sports includes any sport or activity in which a group of individuals, on
the same team, work together to accomplish an ultimate goal which is usually to win.

Team compromises a group of people linked in a common purpose. Teams have

members with skills and generate synergy through a coordinated effort which allows
each member to maximize his/her strengths and minimize his/her weaknesses, thus
generating performance greater than the sum of the performance of its individual
members.

Objectives of Team Sports

1. Physical Development
 To develop physical fitness by maintaining and increasing such
components as speed, flexibility, muscular strength, muscular
endurance, aerobic capacity and anaerobic capacity.

2. Mental Development
 To develop physical literacy through an acquisition of those levels of skill
necessary for efficient body movement and control in a sporting
situation.
 To develop an understanding of the importance of sport in the pursuit of
a healthy and active lifestyle at the college and beyond.
 To develop an ability to observe, analyse and judge the performance of
self and peers in sporting situations.
 To provide the opportunity to be inventive and creative in sporting
activities.

3. Social and Emotional Development

 To promote an awareness of and an ability to appreciate the aesthetic
qualities of sporting performance and movement.
 To develop an appreciation of the concepts of fair play, honest
competition and good sportsmanship.
 To develop the capacity to maintain the interest in a sport or sports and
to persevere in order to achieve success.
 To prepare each student to be able to participate fully in the competitive,
recreational and leisure opportunities offered outside the school
environment.
 To develop leadership skills and foster qualities of cooperation, tolerance,
consideration, trust and responsibility when faced with group and team
problem-solving tasks.
 To develop self-esteem through positive sporting experiences.
 To use sport as a means to develop social interaction and to learn about
others as well as themselves.

Lesson 3: Background, Objective and History of Basketball

Basketball
Is a team sport played by two teams of five players on a rectangular court.
Basketball is one of the world‟s most popular and widely viewed sports in the world.

Objective of the Game

The objective is to shoot a ball through a goal (basket). The team with the ,ost
points at the end of the game wins.

History of the Game

Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian American
physical education professor and instructor at the
International Young Men‟s Christian Association
Training School (YMCA) in Springfield, Massachusetts,
USA invented this indoor game in 1891 to keep his
students occupied and at proper levels of fitness during
the winters. He wrote the basic rules which
incorporated rules from the children‟s game called
“Duck on a Rock”.

He nailed a peach basket onto a 10-foot elevated track is used as a goal. This
peach basket retained its bottom balls had to be retrieved manually after each
“basket” or point scored which is inefficient so the bottom of the basket was removed,
allowing the balls to be poked out with a long dowel each time. The peach baskets
were used until 1906 when they were finally replaced by metal hoops
with backboards.

The first balls made specifically for basketball were brown.

The first official game was played in the YMCA gymnasium in
Albany, New York on January 20, 1892.

Basketball in the Philippines

In the Philippines, basketball is the most viewed and the most popular team
sports played by the youth. Because of its popularity, basketball court can be found
everywhere on the streets, and even on the remote villages or barrios with their
basketball board and ring nailed on the trunk and branches of a tree. Filipino fanatics
have their own teams. The supported and even imitate some of the basketball players
in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and in our own Philippine Basketball
Association (PBA).

Lesson 5: Player Positions

Player Positions
Basketball is a team sports of five players from each team. The tallest members
of a team will play “center”, “power forward” or “small forward” positions, while shorter
players or those who possess the best ball handling skills and speed play “point
guard” or “shooting guard”.

1. Center – Players that are generally the tallest. They are positioned near the
basket.

Offensive: The center‟s goal is to get open for a pass and to shoot. They
are also responsible for blocking defenders, known as picking or
screening, to open other players up for driving to the basket for a goal.
Centers are expected to get some offensive rebounds and put-backs.

Defensive: On defense, the center‟s main responsibility is to keep

opponents from shooting by blocking shots and passes in the key area.
They are also expected to get a lot of rebounds because they are taller.

2. Forward (power/small forward) – The second tallest players are assigned as

forwards. While a forward may be called upon to play under the hoop, they may
also be required to operate in the wings and corner areas.

Offensive: Forwards are responsible to get free for a pass, take outside
shots, drive for goals and rebound.

Defensive: Responsibilities include preventing drives to the goal and

rebounding.

3. Guard (point/shooting guard) – These are potentially the shortest players and
they are good at dribbling fast, seeing the court, and passing. It is their job to
bring the ball down the court and set up offensive plays.

Offensive: Dribbling, passing, and setting up offensive plays are a guard‟s

main responsibilities. They also need to be able to drive to the basket and
to shoot from the perimeter.

Defensive: On defense, a guard is responsible for stealing passes,

contesting shots, preventing drives to the hoop, and for boxing out.

Lesson 6: Rules and Violations of Basketball

Rules of the Game
The game is controlled by the officials consisting of the referee (referred to as
crew chief in the NBA) and the table officials. For college, the NBA, and many high
schools, there are a total of three referees on the court. The table officials are
responsible for keeping track of each teams scoring, time keeping, individual and team
fouls, player substitutions, team possession arrow, and the shot clock. Substitutions
are unlimited but can only be done when play is stopped.

 A team can score a field goal by shooting the ball through the basket ring. A
field goal scores:
a. Two points for the shooting team if the player is touching or closer to
the basket than the three-point line;
b. Three points for the shooting if the player is behind the three-point line;
and
c. One point for the shooting team if the shot was made from the free
throw line, usually after a foul.

 Playing times are as follows:

NBA (National Basketball Association)
-Four 12-min periods, a 15 min half-time break, and as many 5-min
extra periods if necessary.

FIBA (Federation Internationale de Basketball)

-Four 10-min periods, 2-min interval between the 1st and 2nd periods and
between 3rd and 4th periods, and as many 5-min extra periods as necessary.

NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association)

College games use two 20-min halves. A half-time break of 15 minutes is
allowed and overtime periods are five minutes.
High school varsity games use four 8-min periods, a half-time break of
10-min and overtime periods are four minutes.

*Clock is stopped while the play is not active, however additional time (overtime)
may be issued when the game ends with a draw.

Violations
A violation occurs when the player breaks one of the rules of basketball. A
violation results in the awarding of the ball to the opponents.

1. Walking/Traveling – Taking more than a step and a half without dribbling the
ball is traveling. Moving your pivot foot once you‟ve stopped dribbling is
travelling.
2. Carrying/Palming – When a player dribbles the ball with his hand too far to
the side of or, sometimes, even under the ball.
3. Double Dribble – Dribbling the ball with both hands on the ball at the same
time or picking up the dribble and then dribble again is a double dribble.7
4. Held Ball –Occasionally, two or more opposing players will gain possession of
the ball at the same time. In order to avoid a prolonged and/or violent tussle,
the referee stops the action and awards the ball to one team or the other on a
rotating basis.
5. Goaltending – If a defensive player interferes with a shot while it is on the way
down toward the basket, while it is on the way up toward the basket after
having touched the backboard, or while it is in the cylinder above the rim, it is
8

goaltending and the shot counts. If committed by an offensive player, it is a

Page

violation and the ball is awarded to the other team to pass inbounds.

6. Backcourt Violation – One the offense brought the ball across the mid-court
line, they cannot go back across the line during possession. If they do, the ball
is awarded to the other team to pass inbounds.
7. Time Restrictions – A player passing the ball inbounds has five seconds to
pass the ball. If he does not, then the ball is awarded to the other team. Other
time restrictions include the rule that a player cannot have the ball for more
than five seconds when being closely guarded and, in some states and levels,
shot-clock restrictions requiring a team to attempt a shot within a given time
frame.
8. Foul – A foul is an illegal action that may be committed by player from one
team against a player from the opposing team. There are two types of fouls –
defensive fouls and offensive fouls.
 Defensive Fouls – occur when the offensive player is being fouled by the
defender. Defenders should not block, push trip, strike or hold the player
in possession of the ball.
 Offensive Fouls – occurs when a player in offense commits a foul when
charging into a stationary defender.

 Personal Fouls – any type of illegal physical contact including:

 Hitting
 Pushing
 Slapping
 Holding

Personal Foul Penalties – If a player is shooting while being fouled, he gets two
free throws if he‟s shot doesn‟t go in, but only one free throw if he‟s shot does go
in. three free throws are awarded if the player is fouled while shooting for a
three-point goal and they miss their shot. If a player is fouled while shooting a
three-point shot and makes it anyway, he is awarded one free throw. Thus, he
could score four points on the play.
 Illegal Pick/Screen – When the offensive player is moving and sticks out a
limb and makes physical contact with a defender in an attempt to block the
path of the defender.
 Inbounds – If fouled while not shooting, the ball is given to the team the foul
was committed upon. They get the ball at the nearest side or baseline, out of
bounds, and have a5 seconds to pass the ball onto the court.
 One and one – If the team committing the foul has seven or more fouls in the
game, the player who was fouled is awarded one free throw. If he makes his first
shot, then he is awarded another free throw.
 Ten or more fouls – If the team committing the foul has ten or more fouls, the
fouled player receives two free throws.
 Charging – An offensive foul that is committed when a player pushes or runs
over a defensive player. The ball is given to the team that foul was committed
upon.
 Blocking – It is an illegal personal contact resulting from a defender not
establishing position in time to prevent an opponent‟s drive to the basket.
 Flagrant Foul – Violent contact with an opponent. This includes hitting,
kicking, and punching. This type of foul results in free throws plus the offense
retaining possession of the ball after the free throws.
 Intentional Foul – When a player makes physical contact with another player
with no reasonable effort to steal the ball. It is a judgment call for the officials.
 Technical Foul – A player or a coach can commit this type of foul. It does not
involve player contact on the ball but is instead about the „manners‟ of the
9

game. Foul language, obscenity, obscene gesture, and even arguing can be

Lesson 7: Basketball Skills

Basketball Skills
Ball Handling
Ball handling skills are essential especially for short players. Players with
excellent ball handling skills are usually given the role of guard positions. They are
usually the one responsible for bringing the ball to the offensive side and setting up
plays.

Passing
A pass is a method of moving the ball between players. Most passes are
accompanied by a step forward to increase power and are followed through with the
hands to ensure accuracy. Passing is a fundamental skill which is needed when
playing basketball. There are several types of pass and each of them is executed
depending on the situation such as the position of the opponent in relation to the
position of the recipient.

Types of Basketball Passes

1. Chest Pass – the ball is passed directly from the passer‟s chest. A proper chest
pass involves an outward snap of the thumbs to add velocity and leaves the
defense the little time to react.
2. Bounce Pass – the passer bounces the ball crisply about two-thirds of the way
from his own chest to the receiver. The ball strikes the court and bounces up
toward the receiver. The bounce pass takes longer to complete than the chest
pass, but it is also harder for the opposing team to intercept (kicking the ball
deliberately is a violation). Thus, players often use the bounce pass in crowded
moments, or to pass around a defender.
3. Overhead Pass – this type of pass is useful when being marked tightly or if you
are considerably taller than the defender. To execute the overhead pass, both
hands placed on the respective sides of the ball, and then position the ball
behind your head. To make the pass, extend arms forward while bringing the
elbows down put more strength in the pass.
4. Outlet Pass- occurs after a team gets a defensive rebound. This is the next
pass after the rebound.
5. Behind the Back Pass – this type of pass is rarely used in a game unless it is
used for offensive purposes such as to misdirect the defender from the ball. To
execute this pass, player need to cup the ball using the wrist and fingers and
sling it behind back towards the recipient.

Dribbling – The acts of bouncing the ball continuously with one hand, and is a
requirement for a player to take steps with the ball. To dribble, a player pushes the
ball down towards the ground with the fingertips rather than patting it; this ensures
greater control.

Types of Basketball Dribbles

1. Speed Dribble – this is often used when you need to go fast from one point to
another while still maintaining control over the ball. This is done by pushing
the ball in front of and running after it. Usually to make another dribble. The
dribbling height for speed dribble is approximately at waist high and the hand
is kept a little behind the ball to help bounce the ball forward and not
downward.
2. Low Dribble – the dribble is highly effective when tightly defended. This is done
by dribbling the ball as low as possible with back bent forward at the hip and
arms and elbow used for shielding the ball.
11

3. Crossover – this is a dribbling move that uses quick change of direction using
both hands alternately. This move enables players to lose their defender in an
Page

instant. Although the move may look simple as it only entails bouncing the ball

from one hand towards the other hand, it is the timing, body movement, and a
convincing fake that makes this move effective in evading and losing defenders.
This move can be further exploited if you know how to dribble with both hands
and to crossover either from left-to-right or from right-to left.
4. In and Out – this is a fake dribble where in you try to deceive the defender as if
making an attack towards hoop so that he will follow inside when the true
intention is to go back a step outside for a possibly clear jumper. This move is
accomplished by making a single attack dribble inward, but instead of pushing
forward, place the bounce of the ball backwards to its original position so as to
get at least 2 steps away from the defender.

Shooting – the act of attempting to score points by throwing the ball through the
basket, methods varying with players and situations. A shot that misses both the rim
and the backboard completely referred to as an air-ball. A particularly bad shot, or
one that only hits the backboard, is called a brick.

Types of Shots
1. Set-shot – the set-shot is taken from a standard position, with neither foot
leaving the floor, typically used for free throws, and in other circumstances.
2. Jump-shot – is taken in the mid-air with the ball being released near the top of
the jump. This provides much greater power range and it also allows the player
to elevate over the defender. Failure to release the ball before the feet return to
the ground is considered a travelling violation.
3. Lay-up shot – this shot requires the player to be in motion toward the basket
and to “lay” the ball “up” and into the basket, typically of the backboard (the
backboard free, underhand version is called a finger roll). The most crowd-
pleasing and typically highest-percentage accuracy shot is the slam dunk., in
which the player jumps very high and throws the ball downward, through the
basket while touching it.
4. Circus-shot – the circus shot is a low-percentage shot that is flipped, heaved,
scooped, or flung toward the hoop while the shooter is off-balance, airborne,
falling down, and/or facing away from the basket.
5. Back-shot – is a shot taken when the player is facing away from the basket,
and may be shot with the dominant hand or both; but there is a very low
chance that the shot will be successful.
