to be used in the system of Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), Saudi Arabia.
2.0 CROSS-REFERENCES
This Material Standard Specification shall be read in conjunction with the SEC General
Specification No. 01-TMSS-01, titled "General Requirements for All Equipment/Materials"

This TMSS shall also be read in conjunction with SEC Purchase Order or Contract
Schedules for project, as applicable.
The latest revisions of the following Codes and Standards shall be applicable for the
equipment/material covered in this TMSS. In case of conflict, the vendor/manufacturer may

4.1 General
4.1.2 Long rod insulators shall be of manufacturer's standard design and shall
meet or exceed the requirements of this Specification in all respects.
4.1.3 The long rod insulators may consist of a single piece of porcelain together
with their metal parts or of two or more porcelain pieces bolted together to
form a rigid assembly. The insulator coupling shall be of clevis & tongue
type conforming to IEC 60471.
4.2 Ratings
4.2.1 The long rod insulators shall have the minimum specified mechanical
failing loads as shown in Table 1.
Table 1
4.2.2 The required specified mechanical failing load and type of string, I-
suspension (single/double suspension), Vee-suspension and tension strings
(single/double/tripple/quad tension) shall be specified in the data schedule.
4.2.3 The leakage distance of the complete string (suspension or tension) shall be
based on a specific creepage distance of 50 mm/kV (coastal area), 40
mm/kV and 31 mm/kV (inland area) as applicable. The required specific
creepage distance shall be specified in the data schedule.
4.2.4 Long rod insulator strings shall be designed for the basic insulation levels
and the service conditions as specified in 01-TMSS-01, latest revision.
4.2.5 The long rod insulators (complete string) shall have a corona extinction
voltage level of not less than line-to-ground nominal voltage multiplied by
a factor of at least 1.2.
4.3 Materials
4.3.1 The insulators shall be made of good commercial grade wet-process high
strength alumina porcelain. The insulators shall be designed to withstand a
water jet pressure of 3800 kPa.
4.3.2 The entire exposed porcelain surface of the insulators shall be standard
glazed and shall be of brown color. The entire porcelain surface of the
insulators shall be smooth and free of imperfections.
4.3.3 Metal parts shall be made of a good commercial grade of malleable iron,
ductile iron or forged steel, galvanized in accordance with 01-TMSS-01.
The thickness of zinc coating on the insulator caps (end caps &
intermediate attachments) and pins shall not be less than 0.110 mm (770
g/m²) and 0.053 mm (381 g/m²) respectively in accordance with
Specification 01-TMSS-01.
4.3.5 Galvanized steel pins shall be used for the coupling of clevis and tongue.
Cotter pins hump back type shall be used as the locking devices. The
locking devices shall be resilient corrosion resistant and of sufficient
mechanical strength. The cotter pins shall be made of phosphor bronze,
brass or austenitic stainless steel.
4.4 Fabrication
4.4.1 The insulator surface shall be shaped and spaced for effective natural
cleaning and effective use of leakage distance for desert conditions. The
shape of the long rod insulators shall be aeroform type (open profile)
without under ribs and designed in accordance with IEC 60815. The ratio
of shed spacing to shed protrusion shall be greater than 0.65.
4.4.3 The insulators shall be radio and television interference free at operating
voltage.
4.4.4 The hardware shall be cemented on the porcelain, loading the porcelain
with low intensity compression grip over a large area.
4.4.5 The insulator core shall be free from cracks and voids, which may
adversely affect the insulator’s strength and performance.
4.4.7 The design of insulator end caps and the intermediate attachments shall be
suitable for the hot line/live line maintenance operations.
4.4.8 The design of the insulators shall be such that stresses due to expansion and
contraction in any part of the insulator shall not lead to deterioration.
4.4.8 The metal parts shall be designed to transmit the mechanical stresses to the
shell by compression and develop uniform mechanical strength in the
insulator. The end caps shall be circular with inner and outer surfaces
concentric and of such design that they will not yield or distort under
loading conditions.
4.4.9 The metal parts shall be free from cracks, seams, shrinks, air holes, blow
holes and rough edges. All metal surfaces shall be perfectly smooth with no
projecting parts or irregularities which may cause corona. All load bearing
surfaces shall be smooth and uniform so as to distribute stresses uniformly.
The metal parts shall not show any microscopically visible cracks,
insulations and voids.
4.5 Markings
4.5.1 Each insulator shall bear a durable marking in accordance with ANSI or
IEC Standard, identifying the following:
5.0 TESTS
All test results shall be provided for review and acceptance by SEC.
5.1.1 All type (design) tests including radio interference, power arc, thermal
mechanical performance and switching inpulse tests prescribed in the
relevant IEC standards shall be performed on the representative unit or on
the first unit of every new design or rating to be supplied to SEC. The
temeprature variation for thermal mechanical performance test shall be
minus five degrees centigrade (-5oC) to plus sixty five degrees centigrade
(+65oC).
5.1.2 In lieu of the actual type (design) tests, certified test reports of type (design)
tests performed on an identical unit may be submitted to SEC for review
and approval during bidding stage. The test results shall be considered valid
for a period of five years only, after which these tests shall be repeated in
case of any further supply from the same manufacturer and from the same
manufacturing plant. These tests may also be repeated at any time within a
five (5) years period, if SEC considers it necessary for a particular project
as specified in Data Schedule.
All routine (production) tests prescribed in the relevant IEC standards shall be
performed on all units prior to delivery to SEC.
All sample (quality conformance) tests prescribed in the relevant IEC standards shall
be performed on each lot of insulator prior to delivery to SEC.
The pollution test, as an option, shall be performed in accordance with IEC 60507, if
requested by SEC in Data Schedule.
