Birth of Modern Football (1863 - 1970) 1970 - 1980


Towards Fair Play (1970 - 1980) The period 1970-1980 saw significant amendments in
laws against fouls and misconduct. Introduction of red
Streamlining the Game (1980 - 1990) and yellow penalty cards in 1970 was a milestone
which helped to give football the shape we know

RED AND YELLOW CARDS
Although it is impossible to imagine modern football without red
and yellow cards, they were only used for the first time during the

FREE KICKS
When a free kick is awarded to the defending team in their goal
area, it may be taken from any point within the half of the goal area
in which the offence occurred.

1980
FREE KICK INSIDE OWN PENALTY AREA
When a player is taking a free kick inside own penalty area,
opponents must be at least 10 yards (9.15 m) from the ball and
must remain outside the penalty area until the ball has been kicked
out of that area.

GOAL KICK
The opponents of the team executing the goal kick must remain
outside the penalty area until the ball has left the penalty area.
