Report on the Feasibility of Establishing a Drug Rehabilitation Centre at University

Campuses

Prepared by: Vuyiseka Jaji, Secretary of the Department of Student Support

Date: 17 April 2024

Synopsis

The University of Malusi has been approached by the Student Support Committee and
the Student Representative Council (SRC) to address the pressing issue of drug
addiction among students, as well as in the neighbouring high schools. In response, our
department has conducted a thorough investigation into the feasibility of establishing a
drug rehabilitation centre on one of the university campuses. This report outlines the
findings of our investigation, highlighting the potential benefits to university students and
the wider community.

Introduction

Drug addiction is a significant concern affecting individuals across various

demographics, including university students. The establishment of a drug rehabilitation
centre within the university's premises presents an opportunity to address this issue
comprehensively. Moreover, extending support to students from neighbouring high
schools aligns with the university's commitment to community engagement and social
responsibility.

Benefits of Establishing a Rehabilitation Centre

Accessible Support: By situating the rehabilitation centre on campus, students

struggling with addiction will have easier access to professional support and treatment
services. This accessibility can encourage more students to seek help without fear of
stigma or judgment.
Integrated Approach: Collaboration between the rehabilitation centre and academic
departments can facilitate a holistic approach to student well-being. Academic staff can
work in tandem with counsellors and healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive
support tailored to individual needs.

Preventive Measures: The presence of a rehabilitation centre on campus can also serve
as a preventive measure by raising awareness about the risks of substance abuse and
promoting a culture of responsible decision-making among students.

Community Outreach: In addition to supporting university students, the rehabilitation

centre can extend its services to students from neighbouring high schools. This
community outreach initiative not only benefits the wider community but also fosters
positive relationships between the university and its surrounding areas.

Feasibility Assessment

Infrastructure: The university possesses the necessary infrastructure to accommodate a

rehabilitation centre, including suitable buildings and facilities that can be repurposed for
this purpose.

Resources: While establishing and maintaining a rehabilitation centre requires

significant resources, the university can leverage existing funding channels,
partnerships with external organizations, and grants to support this initiative.

Staffing: Recruiting qualified professionals, including counsellors, therapists, and

medical personnel, is essential for the successful operation of the rehabilitation centre.
The university can collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure adequate staffing
levels.

Regulatory Compliance: Compliance with regulatory requirements, including licensing

and accreditation standards, is crucial for the legitimacy and effectiveness of the
rehabilitation centre. Our department will work closely with regulatory bodies to ensure
full compliance.
Conclusion

Based on our assessment, the establishment of a drug rehabilitation centre at one of

the university campuses is not only feasible but also holds immense potential to
address the challenges of drug addiction among university students and the wider
community. This initiative aligns with the university's values of student support,
community engagement, and social responsibility. We recommend further exploration
and planning to bring this project to fruition.

Recommendations

Proceed with the planning and implementation of the drug rehabilitation centre,
including consultations with relevant stakeholders and the allocation of necessary
resources.

Develop a comprehensive strategy for outreach and collaboration with neighbouring

high schools to extend support to students in need.

Establish partnerships with governmental agencies, non-profit organizations, and

healthcare providers to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the rehabilitation
centre.
