MAINTENANCE
INSPECTION
31
5. Maintenance and Inspection
General
If cracks, excessive wear etc. is recognised, contact Blohm + Voss Oil Tools or an authorised service company.
Weldings of the castings should be done only by Blohm + Voss Oil Tools or an authorised service company in
according to Blohm+Voss welding procedure.
A regular preventative maintenance program should be established for all elevators. These written maintenance
procedures should be given to the crew or maintenance personnel.
WARNING: For Service and Maintenance disconnect the air supply. While working at the open elevator, the trigger
has to be in the locked position.
Daily
Inspection
Inspect visually the Latch
Opening Arrangements
and Actuator with springs.
Daily Test
The Function of the
Feedback signal has to
be checked daily. If any
damage or malfunction
were found, take the Position of Locking Pin

repair.

Grease Quality
In order to achieve efficient greasing even at different
environmental temperatures, we recommend the following
grease types should be used (obtainable from Blohm +
Voss Oil Tools):
• Low-Viscosity grease
• Type AVIATICON Grease XRF
Alternatively;
Use EP1 gear lubricating grease for greasing ”non-oil tight
gear trains” when temp. < 0°C/32°F.
Use EP2 when temp. > 0°C/32°F.
33
Frequency of Inspection

or as special circumstances may require. It is advisable,
that after field inspection a record should be made
stating the extend of inspection and inspection results.
Critical Load Inspection
Critical loads may be experienced, for example severe
loads, impact loads such as jarring, pulling on stuck pipe
etc.
Wear of Equipment
Normal wear of bushings and elevator ears caused
by usage will eventually reduce the load capacity of
elevators.
The existence of cracks or the appearance of defects
can indicate severe deterioration and even failures.
Prompt attention is required either to remove the
elevator from service immediately or to undertake
appropriate repair.
A condition, that is by no means rare, is the dangerous
wear of the 18 degree Elevator/Bushing taper.
The 18 degree taper tends to round off and less contact
area to the supporting taper of the elevator will be
available.
The Elevator/Bushing taper, as a result, will begin to
recess into the bore so that a cylindrical surface of
approximately the outside diameter of the tool joint will
directly be above the worn taper.
An occasionally large tool joint force may wedge itself
down in the cylindrical surface. The wedging may be
that of a 2-3 degree angle instead of the 18 degree’s,
resulting in an extremely large spreading force.
34
Dismantling Inspection
When need is shown in a field inspection, dismantling of the elevator should be made
and an inspection in a suitably equipped facility should be carried out.
Methods of Inspection
Routine daily field Inspection procedure
Elevator should be visual inspected on a regular daily basis for cracks, elongations and
other signs of wear, corrosions or overloading. If any elevator show cracks, excessive
wear etc., the elevator should be removed from service.
All elevators should be examined to determine if the latch and the latch lock mechanism
as well as the trigger and pneumatic components are function properly.
Hinge pins, latch lug surfaces and link contact surfaces should be lubricated. Replace
every Warning Label which are damaged.
Semi-annual field Inspection
The periodic semi-annual or critical load inspection in the field should be conducted by
the crew with the supervisor.
Cleaning
Before the semi-annual or critical load inspection, all foreign matter should be removed
from the surfaces to be inspected.
Dismantling and Inspection
Dismantling of the elevator is required if a uniformity detailed inspection is necessary.
The 18 degree or 90 degree taper has to be inspected for uniformity and depth of wear.
Uneven wear or worn recesses of 1/16 inch or more requires refacing of taper surface or
change the bushing.
Hinge pin and springs should be carefully inspected for excess wear and obvious
weakness.
Dismantling Inspection
Generally the Elevator Inspection should be carried out immediately when equipment is
returned to the base, warehouse etc. and is to be carried out prior to its being sent on
the next job.
The elevator should be dismantled and inspected in a suitable equipped facility for
excessive wear, cracks, flaws or deformations. Correction should be made in accordance
with recommendations which can be obtained from Blohm+Voss.
Weldings at the castings should be done only by Blohm+Voss or an authorized service
company.
Cleaning
Before inspection, all foreign material such as dirt, paint, grease, oil, scale etc. should be
removed from the areas to be inspected by a suitable method.
