Slide nine – Landscape concept development The primary emphasis of developing the landscape concept is the idea of creating hospitable environment within the vicinity of the organization. One of the proposed strategies to accomplish the creation of hospitable environment within the compound is the beautification of the landscape of the compound. Implementing the concept of beautification of the compound improves the view of the workforce who are daily tasked with executing assigned duties and creates comfortable working environment that reduces work stress which contributes to the enhancement of their overall health. Moreover, creating sustainable hospitable environment ensures sustainable environmental protection of the compound in terms of regenerating green spaces, refining soil health, conserving water, reducing resource depletion, decreasing waste generation while recreating habitat by selecting suitable plant varieties. Slide ten – beyond landscape The crucial aspect to consider when developing the concept of landscaping is the impacts beyond landscape. The cement industrial air pollution has a negative impact on the environment as the manufacturing process of cement is known to produce vital air pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon monoxide, in addition to heavy metals and other trace amounts of organic compounds that are inevitably hazardous to the health of factory’s workforce and the community at large. It is also important to note that not only these pollutants impact the air but also settle on the vegetation and soil of the landscape. Consequently, rehabilitating and maintaining sustainable landscape aids in mitigating the impact of the production process on the environment by protecting the soil and counter-impacting the air in the surrounding area. Slide eleven – beyond landscape One of the strategies that can be implemented to mitigate the impacts mentioned in the previous slide is the concept of forestation of the vicinity around the factory by specifically emphasizing on the plantation of trees that are native to the area. Moreover, the concept of water future is crucial in reducing the impact of the pollution caused by the production process as it can be implemented to serve as a cooling system of the vicinity in addition to the beautification purpose, and the gabion retaining wall can be implemented to protect the soil in the compound and surrounding areas. Slide twelve – corporate social responsibility National Cement Factory currently feeds its entire workforce in accordance with its policy of fulfilling its corporate social responsibility. Consequently, the organization has committed to feeding some 4000 to 5000 employees when fully operational by providing them meals three times a day. These meals are prepared from ingredients that are comprehensively outsourced from venders in other areas such as Addis Ababa. Slide thirteen – Feeding of workers This slide is the same as the above slide Slide fourteen -Planning for Workforce meals Another landscape concept that is being proposed here is the idea of utilizing the current land of the vicinity for farming purposes that can enable the organization to cultivate its own ingredients that can be applied in preparing the meals for its workforce. Improved farming techniques can be effectively executed utilizing the already available land space which ultimately contributes to the reduction in cost associated with outsourcing ingredients in addition to controlling the climate condition to mitigate the pollution impact of the industry. Slide fifteen – soil-less farming One acclaimed strategy in modern farming is the utilization of soil-less farming. Utilizing soil- less farming has been proven to increase crop yield up to 400%, reduce water consumption by up to 60%, preserves the environment by completely eliminating soil degradation, reduces production cost as oppose to traditional farming techniques, and decreases the labor intensity by up to 80%. Slide sixteen – Horticulture Another contemporary strategy that can be implemented and effectively executed is Horticulture which facilitates the development, sustainable production, and usage of high value and intensively cultivated food plants. Horticulture can be implemented in the production of diverse corps, fruits and vegetables that can be used for the consumption of the organization in feeding its workforce and meet its corporate social responsibility efficiently. Slide seventeen – Drip irrigation Drip Irrigation is also another technique that can be incorporated with the other proposed techniques on the currently available land space in which the technique directly delivers water and nutrients to the growing crops, vegetables and fruits in the most efficient way so the plants receive the right amounts at the right time for optimal production. Slide Eighteen – Green House A proposed addition to the contemporary farming is the concept of building green house that can facilitate the effective creation of a climate that can be controlled to be suitable to the growing crops, vegetables, and crops by buffering the ambient temperature and protecting the growing plants from extreme cold or heat. Slide Nineteen – Dairy and Poultry Creating and developing a farm that consists of dairy production and poultry is also an additional part of the concept with the aim of accommodating the dietary needs of the international workforce within the organization in addition to boosting the overall health of the local workforce through the conception of nutrients from dairy and poultry products. Furthermore, the proposal is comprised of specific plants that can be implemented on the landscape and used for multiple purposes; beautification of the land and as a food source of the animals to be used for the dairy and poultry production. Slide twenty – Waste Management Waste management is also another critical part of the concept of the proposal as the organization inevitably generates wastage from various characteristics of the organization such as from the close to 5000 workforce, landscape, food wastage from the animals, and from the crop and vegetable production. The concept proposes the utilization of the wastage to produce bio gas for power consumption and soil compost as these wastages are nutrient rich and can effectively and efficiently fertilize the ornamental plants, the crops, fruits and vegetables in addition to the plants that can be used for animal feeding.
