Climbing the Corporate Esports Ladder at Unifi’s Gaming City

For the last few years, esports has gained the acceptance of everyone in Malaysia. While initially
people would scoff at “wasting time” playing computer games and the likes, now it’s embraced by
mostly everyone, from the normal teenage kids up to even the upper echelons of the corporate
ladders. Hence why Unifi, in conjunction with the recent Comic Fiesta 2019 held the Corporate
Esports Tournament at their “The Gamingcity” booth.

While most tournaments that we are used today are highly competitive and features professional
and semi professional teams, the Corporate Esports Tournament features amateur players that
would usually have spent their days working behind the desks doing white collar works. This time
they are given the chance to represent their corporate entity in front of a large crowd.

Joining this tournament are the who’s who of the Malaysian corporate world. Petronas, Shell, Bank
Negara Malaysia, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC), KPMG, Media Prima, Astro and eGG Network all
sent in their best representatives that would have unlikely thought their hobby would actually be
used to defend the pride and honour of their companies.

Four games were chosen to be played during the tournament, which are Dota 2, PUBG Mobile,
Counter Strike: Global Offensive and Mobile Legends Bang Bang, games which are certainly quite big
in the local esports scene. And while the players themselves are quite amateur, they certainly are
pro in how they handled the pressure of performing on such a big stage.

Petronas and Shell shows that motorsports are not the only sports that they are capable of, winning
the MLBB and CS:GO tournament respectively, while Media Prima and KPMG took the honours of
winning PUBG Mobile and Dota 2.
