Sample Problem 01 Torsion
A shaft with constant diameter of 2 in. is loaded by
torques applied to gears fastened to it as shown. If
G = 12x106 psi, compute in degrees the relative
angle of twist between gears A and D.

Sample Problem 02 Torsion
The torque of 100 kip-ft produces a maximum
torsional shear stress of 8,000 psi in the 16-ft-
long hollow steel shaft. Note that the inner
diameter of the shaft is two-thirds of its outer
diameter D. Use G = 12x106 psi for steel.
(a) Determine the outer diameter D.
(b)Find the angle of twist of the shaft.

Sample Problem 03 Torsion
Two forces, each of magnitude P, are applied
to the wrench. The diameter of the steel shaft
AB is 15 mm. Determine the largest allowable
value of P if the shear stress in the shaft is not
to exceed 120 MPa and its angle of twist is
limited to 5°Use G=80 GPa for steel.
