Part V: Short Answer Question Item

41. Equatorial Rainforest , Hot deserts and Afromontane

42. Rainfall distribution in Africa is initially controlled by the apparent movement of the sun
which causes oscillation of ITCZ. Hence , in the northern hemisphere ITCZ is near Tropic of
Cancer which indicates low atmospheric pressure in the region. Therefore, moisture laden winds
blow from Atlantic and Indian oceans causing rain over west African coasts Ethiopian highlands
and eastern Madagascar. In the southern hemisphere of Africa the position of overhead sun is
near the tropic of Capricorn pulling the offshore north east trade winds southward over Africa
which causes dry weather over Africa north of equator except Mediterranean region which
experiences wet condition due to westerly winds. Southern Africa receive its maximum rainfall
south east trade winds of Indian oceans. Congo basin receives from moist winds of Atlantic
Ocean.

43. Africa’s equatorial climate is characterized by:
 Consistently hot temperature throughout the year
 High diurnal range of temperature
 Low annual range of tem premature
 High amount of rainfall all year round
 Thick cloud cover
 Calm wind

44. Tropical climate ranges from equatorial rainforest type to hot desert, In general high
temperature characterizes tropical climate due to high intensity of insolation. Rainfall
varies controlled by altitude, latitude and ocean currents,

45. Tropical desert and semi desert are characterized by:

 High mean daily and mean annual temperature
 Contrasting day time temperature and night time temperature
 Very low amount and unreliable rainfall
 Turbulent and dry wind
 Clear sky
