Introductory Message
Welcome to Environmental Science

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts

of the Schools Division of Himamaylan and DepEd Regional Office VI -
Western Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management
Division (CLMD). This is developed to guide the learning facilitators
(teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping the learners meet the
standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials

aimed to guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and
time using the contextualized resources in the community. This will also
assist the learners in acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and
attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Environmental Science 7 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate

the leaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning
Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you
and learner. This will be made available to the learners with the
references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Environmental Science 7 Activity Sheet is developed to help

you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material
provides you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent
learning. Being an active learner, carefully read and understand the
instructions then perform the activities and answer the assessments. This
will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE ACTIVITY SHEET No. 2

Impacts of Deforestation to Human Beings and Environment

I. Learning Competency with Code

• Identify the different negative effects of deforestation on human beings and

the environment.

II. Background Information for Learners

Trees are one of the most important aspects of the planet Earth. Trees
are vitally important to the environment, animals, and of course for human
beings. They are important for the climate of the Earth, as they act as filters
of carbon dioxide. Forests are known as habitats and shelters to millions of
species. However, the trees on the planet are being depleted at a very fast
rate.

Deforestation occurs for a variety of reasons either need for space or a

need for resources from the trees. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, mitigating
greenhouse gas emissions produced by human activity. As climate change
continues, trees play an important role in carbon appropriation, or the
capture and storage of excess carbon dioxide. This build-up of carbon
dioxide could not only upset the carbon cycle but also contribute to global
warming as it is a greenhouse gas that prevents heat energy from the sun
leaving the earth’s atmosphere.

Deforestation is a big problem for humans and also for the whole
ecosystem. While it is quite profitable for certain small groups like farmers,
deforestation is extremely harmful to the planet since it enhances global
warming and also leads to the extinction of many species. It also increases
the likelihood of floods and other natural disasters. Thus, you should make
sure to minimize the deforestation process on a global scale.

In this learning activity, you will learn the different negative effects of
deforestation to the environment.
III. Activity Proper

Activity 1: Causes for Deforestation

The following are causes of deforestation. Match Column A with Column B

to identify them.

Column A Column B
1. Agriculture A. the process of producing food, feed,
fiber and many other desired
products by the cultivation of certain
plants and the raising of
domesticated animals or livestock.
2. Desertification B. cutting down trees in a forest to
harvest timber for wood, products or
fuel
3. Forest Fires C. Due to population growth, more and
more space is needed for the
building of houses and the related
infrastructure.
4. Logging D. the addition of any substance or any
form of energy to the environment at
a rate faster than it can be dispersed,
diluted, decomposed, recycled, or
stored in some harmless form
5. Mining E. the use of coal and oil mines the
chemicals used for the extraction of
the resources are often dumped into
nature
6. Urbanization F. the process through which cities
grow, and higher and higher
percentages of the population comes
to live in the city
G. It happens due to extreme warm
summers and milder winters
whether caused by man or nature,
results in a massive loss of forest
cover

Activity 3: Let’s Fight Deforestation and Global Warming

You are a renowned environmentalist in your place and was invited to talk to the
group of Grade 7 Science, Technology and Engineering (STE) students. A challenge
is given for you to present it in the following suggested creative ways. Be able to
choose one (1).

1. Collage with a brief statement as a campaign against deforestation. You may

use different pictures from old magazines, newspapers or from the internet.
Place this in a piece of short-size bond paper.

2. Poster slogan using short size bond paper showing ways how to avoid the
negative effects of deforestation and global warming.

3. Short essay with 150-200 words presenting the suggested ways on how to
minimize the negative effects of deforestation and global warming.
4. Any other ways as long as it will catch the attention of the Grade 7 learners
focusing on how to avoid the negative impacts of deforestation and global
warming.

Your presentation will be rated based on the following criteria:

• Details and information
• Method of presentation
