PERFORMANCE TASK
SCIENCE & MATHEMATICS
SECOND QUARTER

Engaging Scenario:
Acids and bases are all around us. Experimenting with acids and bases can make for exciting chemistry
projects and adding conversion of unit for the substances used will add some fun. As a science teacher, you
want to let your class learn about the properties of acids and bases. You will prepare an experiment that will
investigate properties of acidic and basic mixture using natural indicators and at the same time, you are going to
convert the unit of measurement used.

GOAL: To learn about the properties of acidic and basic mixture using natural indicators

ROLE: A Science teacher

AUDIENCE: Students

SECOND QUARTER PERFORMANCE TASK
Materials:

 Lemon juice
 Vinegar
 Dishwashing liquid
 Fabric conditioner
 Shampoo
 Blue and Red Litmus paper
 Test tubes

Procedure:

1. Prepare all the needed materials in this experiment.

2. Pour certain amount of each substance into separate test tubes and record it in the table.
3. Use the litmus paper to determine whether the substance is an acid or a base.
4. Record your observation in the table as to what changes happened in the litmus paper and identify
whether the substance is an acid or a base.
5. Convert the amount of substances from mL to L.
