Mandatory volunteering made many members of Maryland high school class of 1997 rumble with
indignation. They didn’t like a new requirement that made them take part in the school’s community service
program.
Future seniors, however, probably won't be as resistant now that the program has been broken in.
Some, like John Maloney, already have completed their required hours of approved community service. The
Bowie High School sophomore earned his hours in eighth grade by volunteering two nights a week at the
Larkin-Chase Nursing and Restorative Center in Bowie. He played shuffleboard, cards, and other games
with the senior citizens. He also helped plan parties for them and visited their rooms to keep them company.
That experience inspired him to continue volunteering in the community.
John, 15, is not finished volunteering. Once a week he videotapes animals at the Prince George
County animal shelter in Forestville. His footage is shown on the Bowie public access television channel in
hopes of finding homes for the animals. "Volunteering is better than just sitting around," says John, "and I
like animals; I don't want to see them put to sleep. "
He's not the only volunteer in his family. His sister, Melissa, an eighth grader, has completed her
hours also volunteering at Larkin-Chase. "It is a good idea to have kids go out into the community, but it's
frustrating to have to write essays about the work," she said. "It makes you feel like you're doing it for the
requirement and not for yourself." The high school's service learning office, run by Beth Ansley, provides
information on organizations seeking volunteers so that students will have an easier time fulfilling their
hours. "It's ridiculous that people are opposing the requirements," said Amy Rouse, who this summer has
worked at the Ronald McDonald House and has helped to rebuild a church in Clinton. "So many people
won't do the service unless it's mandatory," Rouse said, "but once they start doing it, they'll really like it and
hopefully it will become a part of their lives - like it has become a part of mine."
Question 29: What is the main idea of the passage?

How long will a baby born today live? 100 years? 120 years? Scientists are studying genes that could
mean long life for us all.
There are already many, many people who have passed the landmark age of 100. In fact, there are
now so many healthy, elderly people that there’s a name for them: the wellderly. These are people over the
age of eighty who have no major illnesses, such as high blood pressure, heart disease or diabetes.
There are many scientific studies of communities where healthy old age is typical. These include
places like Calabria in southern Italy and the island of Okinawa in Japan. In Calabria, the small village of
Molochio has about 2,000 inhabitants. And of these, there are at least eight people over a hundred years old.
When researchers ask people like this the secret of their long life, the answer is almost always about food
and is almost always the same: ‘I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables.’ ‘I eat a little bit of everything.’ ‘I neither
smoke nor drink.’
In the past, scientists looked at things such as diet and lifestyle for an explanation of long life, these
days they are also looking at genetics. Researcher Eric Topol says that there must be genes that explain why
people are protected from the effects of aging process. The new research into long life did scrutinize groups
of people who have a genetic connection. One interesting group lives in Ecuador. In one area of the country
there are a number of people with the same genetic condition. It’s called Laron syndrome. These people
don’t grow very tall – just over one metre. But Laron syndrome also give them protection against cancer and
diabetes. As a result, they live longer than other people in their families. Meanwhile, on the Hawaiian island
of Oahu, there’s another group of long-lived men, Japanese-Americans. They have a similar gene to the
Laron syndrome group.
Back in Calabria, researchers constructed the family trees of the 100-year-old people. They looked at
family information from the 19th century to today. It is concluded that there are genetic factors that give
health benefits to the men. This is a surprising result because generally in Europe, women live longer than
men. So what really makes people live longer? It seems likely that it is an interaction of genes, the
environment and probably a third factor – luck.
Question 34: Which of the following is NOT true about the Laron syndrome?

For many years, scientists have been arguing about global warming. While they don't all agree about
what this might mean for Planet Earth, many think it is going on - and that we can do something about it. We
need a few more years to gather facts before anyone can say for sure. But people need to start now to do
things to stop it.
There are many types of gases in our atmosphere. Some of them absorb the heat from the sun and
control our climate. "Greenhouse gases” are those that hold the heat around the planet's surface. When we
increase the level of these gases, we upset the balance. These extra gases trap even more heat.
Some scientists say global warming has already started to change the environment. The Earth's
temperature has risen one degree Fahrenheit this century. Many scientists believe it could rise from two to
eight degrees Fahrenheit in the next hundred years. This would be the fastest rise in 10,000 years.
Sea levels could rise. Ice sheets could melt and add to the water level. Many places near the coast would
be in danger of flooding. If the climate change is too large and too fast, some plants and animals could really
suffer. They could even die out. Weather could become more violent and extreme. In some places there
would be more forest fires. But in other areas there would be more rain and snow, storms and floods.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions
Over the last several decades, environmental specialists have proposed various strategies aimed at
slowing down this process of deforestation in developing countries. Many of these proposals are indeed
valuable ideas in that they are realistic attempts to address some of the causes of deforestation, such as
farming, cattle ranching, and commercial logging. All of them rely on government involvement of some
kind.
There are three broad categories of solutions: state economic policies, internal agreements, and
international programs. Economic policies generally attempt to limit the activity of small farmers through
government action. Government actions can include the clear proper definition and enforcement of property
rights, meaning that squatting, or illegally setting on land, would be more difficult. Subsidies can be used to
encourage conservation. That is, money may be paid to supplement the income of those farmers who make an
effort to reduce the usual amount of damage to the forest that their farms cause. In addition, taxes can act as a
deterrent to undesirable land use.
An internal agreement may be made between governments and indigenous or native people living in
the moist rainforests and open woodlands of the tropics, where the vast majority of this deforestation is
occurring. Such an agreement would allow people to carry on traditional activities adapted for some
economic benefit.
Finally, international agreements usually involve the exchanges of monetary aid in return for
government action to protect its forests. One such plan seeks to help pay a nation’s debt in exchange for
restrictions on certain kinds of activities in rainforests. Instead of selling logging concessions to pay down
that obligation, the government receives money for banning or restricting logging in its forests. There is also
the proposal of a global fund created in order to grant money to countries that choose to protect their
environments.
It is clear that something must be done to protect the forests of the world. If the current rate of
deforestation continues, the world’s rainforests will vanish within 100 years, causing numerous adverse
effects on the global climate and eliminating the majority of plant and animal species on the planet.

European Union, almost 100 million citizens of all ages invest their time, talents and money to make a
positive contribution to their community by volunteering in civil society organizations, youth clubs,
hospitals, schools, in sport clubs, etc. For the Commission, volunteering is an active expression of civic
participation which strengthens common European values such as solidarity and social cohesion.
Volunteering also provides important learning opportunities, because involvement in voluntary
activities can provide people with new skills and competences that can even improve their employability.
This is especially important at this time of economic crisis. Volunteering plays an important role in sectors
as varied and diverse as education, youth, culture, sport, environment, health, social care, consumer
protection, humanitarian aid, development policy, research, equal opportunities and external relations.
Objectives of the Year:
1. To create an enabling and facilitating environment for volunteering in the EU;
2. To empower volunteer organizations and improve the quality of volunteering;
3. To reward and recognize volunteering activities; and
4. To raise awareness of the value and importance of volunteering.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer
to each of the questions from 34 to 40.
Nature has always provided a stimulus for inventive minds. Early flying machines clearly were an attempt to
emulate the freedom of birds. Architects and engineers have often consciously modeled buildings on forms found in
nature. A more recent example of the inspiration given by nature is the invention of Velcro. The inventor of this now
common fastening device noticed that small burrs attached to his dog's coat grasped the hairs by means of tiny
hooks. This led him to invent a synthetic fabric whose surfaces mimic the clasping properties of this natural seedpod.
Animals and plants have evolved solutions to the kinds of problems that often interest engineers and designers.
Much current research in material science is concerned with actively examining the natural world, especially at the
molecular level, for inspiration to develop materials with novel properties. This relatively new field of study is
sometimes known as biomimetics, since it consciously attempts to mimic nature.
Researchers have investigated several interesting areas. For example, they have studied how the molecular
structure of antler bone contributes to its amazing toughness, how the skin structure of a worm contributes to its
ability to crawl, how the sea cucumber softens its skeleton and changes shape so that it can squeeze through tiny
gaps in rocks, or what gives wood its high resistance to impact. These investigations have led to several
breakthroughs in the development of composite materials with remarkable properties.
Predictions for future inventions that may be developed from these lines of research include so-called smart
structures that design and repair themselves in a similar way to a variety of processes in the natural world. For
example, engineers have envisaged bridges that would detect areas heavily stressed by vehicle movement or wind.
The bridge structure would then automatically add or move material to the weak areas until the stress is reduced.
The same principle might be used to repair damaged buildings. Other new materials that have been imagined are
substances that would copy photosynthesis in green plants in order to create new energy sources. The potential
impact of biomimetic research is so great that the twenty-first century may come to be known as the "Age of
Materials."
Question 34: The passage is primarily concerned with _________.
A. future research into the uses of Velcro B. the effect of the Age of Materials on nature
C. the development of products based on nature D. problems that preoccupy designers and engineers

A. Biomimetics is not promising.
B. Biomimetics may lead to the development of new creatures.
C. Biomimetics may lead to useful inventions.
D. Biomimetics has provided the new material for smart structures.
Question 40: According to the passage, which of the following would NOT be a useful biomimetic product?
A. Tomatoes mimicking the structures that give sea cucumbers the ability to squeeze through cracks
B. Bulletproof jackets mimicking the structures that give wood its resistance to impact
C. Glass in windshields mimicking the structures that give antler bone its toughness
D. Cables mimicking the structures that give spiderwebs their flexibility and tensile strength
