Operations on Signals
The Reflection Operation
◼ Also known as Folding Operation.
◼ x(-t) → reflection about y-axis
◼ Example: If x(t) represents a video signal out of a
video recorder, then x(-t) is the signal out of the
video player when the rewind switch is pushed.

Even and Odd Signal
◼ Reflection is extremely useful in examining the
symmetry properties that a signal may possess.
◼ The condition for a signal to be Even is -
𝒙 −𝒕 = 𝒙 𝒕

◼ The condition for a signal to be Odd is -


𝒙 −𝒕 = −𝒙 𝒕

◼ An arbitrary signal x(t) can always be expressed as


a sum of even and odd signals,
◼ Here, the even part of the signal is,
