 SILK REELING UNIT

1. INTRODUCTION

Silk is the world's most elegant

textile with unparalleled
grandeur, natural
brightness, Inherent
affinity for colouring, high
absorption, light weight,
soft touch and high durability,
also known all over the world as
the "Queen of Textiles". The
life and culture of the Indians were intermingled with Silk. India has a rich and complex history of
silk manufacturing and its trade in silk dates back to the 15th century. The sericulture sector
provides employment in rural and semi-urban areas of India to approximately 8 million people.
Reeling is a method of unwinding the cocoon's silk filament. The method of reeling is a major task.
Based on the appropriate thickness (denier) of silk thread filaments, the number of cocoons are
combined and reeled together.

"The word sericulture is derived from the Greek word "sericos" which means "silk" and means
"rearing" from the English word "community. Sericulture is the art and science of silkworm
rearing, and its end product is silk, for the processing of raw silk. Silk is known as the Queen of
Fabrics and is famous for its natural hue, purity and unusual lustre. It is an animaloriented natural
fiber made from silkworm (Hiware 2012). Sericulture refers to the deliberate mass-scale rearing
of animals producing silk to extract silk from them (Ganga 2006). Sericulture is an important labor-
intensive agro-based industry that provides unemployed/underemployed people with productive
jobs in rural and semi-urban areas and promotes economic growth and improves people's quality
of living. It has also proved to be a highly remunerative cash crop with low spending and high
dividends. Sericulture is unique in raw silk, reeling and then extremely industrial at the last stage
of silk processing for several reasons, such as labor intensive in mulberry cultivation and cocoon
production and cottagebased industry. Sericulture includes cultivation of mulberries, silkworm
rearing, processing of larvae, silk reeling and weaving, and then selling of silk.
 2. MARKET POTENTIAL

Indian silk products are exported to major traditional markets, such as the USA, Asia Region, and
European countries and small markets. Exporting silk goods earnings over the years have
decreased because of the global recession. The export earnings were Rs.2,829.88 crores in 2014-
15. India, next to China, is the world's second largest producer of silk and has a 12.00 percent share
of global raw silk production. Though India produces about 18,475 MTs of raw silk annually
(2006-07), total annual consumption of silk in the region, per annum is around 26,000 MTs. It is
projected that the volume-based CAGR will rise by 7.8 percent from 2016 to 2021. Global silk
market is expected to reach USD 16.94 billion by 2021.

Of all the cloth fibres, silk is the most cherished. It is the continuous filament exuded by the
silkworm through a small opening under the jaws, called the spinneret, at the end of its larval stage.
Silk is said to have played a leading part in the opening of the East-West trade route. Silk export
earnings are rising steadily, particularly from the United States and European countries, due to the
increasing demand for Indian Silk products. During the year 2002-03, export earnings of
Rs.2,294.05 crores rose to Rs.3338.35 crores in 2006-07, reflecting a rise of about 46 percent. Due
to its differentiation and low production rate, the India Silk Products have high export potential.
As a traditional sericultural region, India holds a unique place in the world because, in addition to
the mulberry silk, it has the distinction of cultivating all four commercially recognised varieties of
Vanya Silks viz., Tasar, Oak Tasar, Muga and Eri. The export value of these Vanya Silks has yet to
be commercially explored.

3. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

3.1 PRODUCT USES

Silk thread, paired with a fine diameter, has tremendous elasticity and strength. In weaving,
it can be indefinitely extended and is ideal for silk and wool. Buttonhole twist is a solid,
lustrous silk that is approximately three times the diameter of ordinary sewing silk and is
used for buttonholes, buttonholes and other decorative effects.
 3.2 RAW MATERIAL REQUIREMENT

• The silkworm cocoon is the raw material for silk reeling, as far as the silk industry is concerned.
The protein fiber of silk consists primarily of fibroin and is produced to form cocoons by some
insect larvae.
• Spools- a cylindrical device which has a rim or ridge at each end and an axial hole for a pin or
spindle and on which thread is wound.

For one KG of raw silk approximate 6-8 KG of cocoon is required.

3.3 MANUFACTURING PROCESS

The manufacturing process can be broken down in following steps:
