Global Perspectives
IGCSE 0457

Grade 9
Cambridge IGCSE Global Perspectives is a
groundbreaking and stimulating course that stretches
across traditional subject boundaries and develops
transferable skills. It is both cross-curricular and skills-
based and taps into the way the learners of today enjoy
learning, including teamwork, presentations, projects,
and working with other learners around the world. The
emphasis is on developing the ability to think critically
about a range of global issues where there is always
more than one point of view
Introduction

The focus of the homework is on developing a skills-based

approach to learning which includes developing critical and
analytical ways of thinking, as opposed to merely demonstrating
great knowledge about global issues.

The homework is focused on the need to evaluate and present a

range of possible actions (including policies) at different levels
(from the personal to the global), clearly developing and
articulating a perspective of their own.

These areas of study could be explored through a variety of stimuli,

such as films or images and research reports and articles. These
may raise issues that are more personal than global – however,
global implications should always be born in mind.

It should be emphasised that marks will be given for the quality

of personal reflection and response, rather than the quantity of
information (re)produced – though the reflection needs to be
clearly in response to facts, as well as expressive of a personal
point of view or perspective.

1. Students are required to cite their sources by providing a

bibliography.
2. Students must avoid plagiarism.
Assignment 1: Research Discourse

The assignment is to produce a 1000-word research discourse on a

chosen inquiry question.

Guidelines:
Conduct some initial research across key global media outlets to
deepen your awareness of current key global issues.

Formulate an inquiry question based on an area of interest that

connects to one of the topics below. Your question should have
an element of argumentation.

Research further into your chosen inquiry question - you may use a
range of mediums, traditional research and media reports, and also
digital avenues such as videos.

Look at the causes of your issue, and the impacts and consequences
at a global and national level.

Consider the viewpoint of a range of people who are involved e.g they
are affected by the issue, or they may be trying to solve a problem, or
they may have an opinion as a stakeholder.

Reflect on actions that can make a difference (why/how might they

make a difference?)
Reflect on your own views, which cause and consequence do you
believe to be the most impactful? Has your view changed during the
course of your research? If they have changed what’s changed
them?

Select and organise information (clearly structure your work)

Ensure you have cited your work and create a bibliography at the
end of your report.

Sample inquiry questions:

‘Do belief systems influence society globally? (Belief systems)

• ‘How do global influences affect family life?’ (Family)
• Has global use of the Internet changed the way we communicate?
(Digital world)
• ‘How important is the continued existence of the Amazon Rain
Forest?’ (Biodiversity and ecosystem loss)
• ‘Is species invasion the main threat to global biodiversity?’ (Humans
and other species)
• Can a sustainable lifestyle be achieved globally? (Sustainability)
• How does migration impact communities globally? (Changing
communities)
• Has globalisation helped economic development worldwide? (Trade
and Aid)

Assignment 3: Solving Global Issues
The world today is highly interconnected, and an important aspect of
becoming a global citizen is developing the ability to understand these
connections, whether they be political, economic, or social. Various
issues are controlled by international legislation and organisations,
however, some issues appear to be focused on one region or country,
until deeper research reveals the global impact. Nations around the
world seek to develop policies to ensure they thrive and develop as
part of this interconnected world.

Pollution is an example of a global issue that has impacted Pakistan

quite severely.

Read the following articles, and conduct your own research to

understand the causes of pollution in Pakistan. Identify actions that
have been taken by our governments to reduce pollution, and
identify possible solutions which can be considered.

cities-in-the-world/a-59686579

Consider which solution is best for the government of Pakistan to

adopt, to mitigate the problem, and explain at least three reasons why
you have made this choice.
In choosing your solution you must take into account the reality of
Pakistan and the resources available to the nation.

Presentation:
Choose any appropriate format to communicate your analysis
e.g. poster, PowerPoint, video, weblog, webpages, or a mixture of
different media
Assignment 4: Exploring Artificial Intelligence

Website - https://gpte.ai/

UNESCO has noted that Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to
address some of the biggest challenges in education today and accelerate
progress toward SDG 4. There are many risks and challenges involved with
its use, but UNESCO has committed to supporting countries in harnessing
the potential of AI technologies to achieve the Education 2030 Agenda.

AI offers opportunities and challenges for education, and by exploring the

website shown above, you can investigate these for yourself.

Task:

1. Identify AI tools that can support your Global Perspectives learning

journey.
a. Which are the best tools for research?
b. Which tools can support the creation of an Outcome for the team
project i.e. a video/leaflet/presentation?

2. Analyse and critique these tools.

a. In what way will they improve the quality of your work?
b. What are the limitations (if any) of the AI application?
