 Asbestos takes many forms – fibres, dust, incased
in concrete.
 It is in its most dangerous form as a dust/powder
and is harmful when inhaled.
 The fibres stick in the lungs and have long term
effects on breathing (Respiratory systems). The
effects of asbestos exposure take years to develop
and asbestosis is usually manifested in 20 -40
years.
 All employees undergo medicals to establish their
lung functioning prior to working with or near
asbestos.
 Dust masks and respirators are to be worn at all
times when working with asbestos. Full sealed
overalls are to be worn at all times and disposed
of daily in double sealed bags. Ear Plugs, gloves
and all forms skin are to be covered and exposure
to any asbestos form are to be limited entirely.
 Damaged overalls are to be disposed of
immediately in sealed bags and the clothes
exposed to asbestos destroyed or thrown away.
 Water is used to reduce the amount of asbestos
fibres released into the air.
 All asbestos material is to be stored away from
welfare facilities and in designated areas on site
with applicable asbestos signage displayed.
 Only authorized trained and appointed asbestos
workers are allowed to handle any form of
asbestos. No unauthorized employees are allowed
to handle asbestos in any form
 All employees are expected to where applicable
respirators/dust masks while working on a site
with asbestos.
 All asbestos material is to be stored in sealed
designated areas in skips and removed from site
daily or when the storage area has reached an
agreed capacity. This material is to be disposed at
Safe Disposal sites off site.
