1. The first step of Rail
The train was born over two centuries
ago. On February 13, 1804, 216 years
ago, Richard Trevithick, an English
engineer, presented an extraordinary
machine, never seen before: a steam
locomotive!
Richard Trevithick (13 April 1771 – 22 April 1833) was a British inventor and
mining engineer from Cornwall.
In 1830, the first passenger railroad line
was opened between Manchester and
Liverpool. This two-track line, operated
solely by steam, was the first to provide
regular passenger service.
