Draft (2010-03-30)
This is the draft release of GBSS12.0.
3 DTRX
3.1 Principles
If HIGHMODPWREN is set to ALLOWED, enhanced EDGE coverage is enabled. In this case, the
maximum output power of the TRX is increased by the value specified by UPGRADELEV8PSK. If the
BCCH TRX is to be enabled with enhanced EDGE coverage, MAINBCCHHIGHMODPWREN should be
set to ALLOWED. In this manner, the maximum output power of the BCCH TRX is increased by the
value specified by UPGRADELEV8PSK.
For the DTRX, if one of the two carriers that belong to the same cell and DTRX is idle at a transmit
moment, then PS services are transmitted by the two carriers at the same time. That is, dynamic
transmit diversity or dynamic PBT is used to transmit PS services. In this case, the maximum output
power of high-rate PS services can reach to a level as that of CS services when the DTRX is in
separated or combined transmit mode.
For details about dynamic transmit diversity, see Transmit Diversity Feature Parameter Description.
For details about dynamic PBT, see PBT Feature Parameter Description.
The implementation modes of enhanced EDGE coverage of a DTRX vary according to the SNDMD of
Huawei double-transceiver series base stations, as listed in Table 3-2.

4 Multi-Carrier TRX
4.1 Principles
If HIGHMODPWREN is set to ALLOWED, enhanced EDGE coverage is enabled. In this case, the
maximum output power of the TRX is increased by the value specified by UPGRADELEV8PSK. If the
BCCH TRX is to be enabled with enhanced EDGE coverage, MAINBCCHHIGHMODPWREN should be
set to ALLOWED and the maximum output power of the BCCH TRX is increased by the value specified
by UPGRADELEV8PSK.
For a multi-carrier TRX, output power is shared among multiple TRXs so that the transmit power of TRX
in 8PSK modulation scheme is increased. The power amplifier of a multi-carrier TRX does not transmit
signals at full power in most cases due to power control or due to no traffic in some timeslots. In this case,
power margin exists. If the power margin is used by other 8PSK traffic channels on the same timeslot,
the maximum output power of the multi-carrier TRX in 8PSK modulation scheme may reach that of the
multi-carrier TRX in GMSK modulation scheme.
5 Related Feature
5.1 Frequency Hopping
Both double-transceiver units and multi-transceiver units support enhanced EDGE coverage when
non-frequency hopping (FH), radio frequency (RF) FH, or baseband FH is used.
6 Engineering Guidelines
6.1 DTRX
6.1.1 Cell Configuration S2 or Lower
When a cell is in S2 configuration mode, a BCCH TRX can be enabled with enhanced EDGE coverage,
as shown in Figure 6-1. A non-BCCH TRX cannot be enabled with enhanced EDGE coverage because it
cannot transmit signals at full power.
Figure 6-1 DTRX with cell configuration S2
When a cell is in S1 configuration mode, one TRX works and another TRX is idle, as shown in Figure 6-2.
The power amplifier of the idle TRX is power off out of power saving. Therefore, enhanced EDGE
coverage cannot be enabled in this scenario.
Figure 6-2 DTRX with cell configuration S1
When a cell is in S2 or lower configuration mode, one of the TRXs of each DTRX serves a cell, as shown
in Figure 6-3. The two TRXs of the same DTRX belong to different cells, and thus dynamic PBT or
dynamic transmit diversity cannot be enabled. Therefore, enhanced EDGE coverage cannot be enabled
in this scenario.
Figure 6-3 DTRX with cell configuration S2 or lower and TRX shared by another cell
When a cell is in S3 configuration mode, two DTRXs are configured and one of them serve two cells, as
shown in Figure 6-5.
If the BCCH TRX is configured on a DTRX that is shared by another cell, then the non-BCCH TRXs on
the other DTRX can be enabled with dynamic PBT or dynamic transmit diversity, and thus enhanced
EDGE coverage can be enabled.
If the BCCH TRX is configured on a DTRX whose two TRXs serve the same cell, the BCCH TRX can
be enabled with dynamic PBT or dynamic transmit diversity, and thus enhanced EDGE coverage can
be enabled. Neither the two non-BCCH TRXs can be enabled with dynamic PBT or dynamic transmit
diversity. Thus, enhanced EDGE coverage cannot be enabled.

Parameter ID NE MML Description
HIGHMODPWREN BSC6900 SET Meaning: Whether to enable the high-order
GCELLBASICPARA(Op modulation power increase function in a cell. In
tional) the case of a multi-transceiver unit, multiple
TRXs may share one channel. If the total
output power of the TRXs is lower than the
maximum allowed transmit power of the
channel at a time point, the remaining power
can be used to increase the transmit power of a
service in a high-order modulation scheme. In
this manner, the transmit power in a high-order
modulation scheme is comparable to the
transmit power in GMSK. In the case of a
double-transceiver unit, the two transmit
channels can be used to increase the transmit
power.
