A BUSY DAY IN THE ER

Key

1. Warm up

5 mins.
In pairs, guess what has happened in each photo. They might attempt to use present perfect or past simple in
some of them. Make notes of any mistakes for future reference, but don’t make any corrections yet.
Suggested answers:
A) He is having an allergic reaction; B) Her hand has been scalded; C) He has a wound on his leg; D) She is having
a heart attack; E) He has dislocated his shoulder; F) He is unconscious; G) She is choking; H) He has sprained his
ankle.

2. Vocabulary 1

Part A
10 mins.
Ask students to listen to the conversations and match to the photos above. Ask students to compare answers by
saying what’s happening in each, in order to practice the target language. Then correct as a whole class.

Please note that in the US Emergency services are referred to as ’911’ as that is the number you dial to contact
them.

1. C 2. A
3. E 4. B
5. H 6. D
7. G 8. F
Part B
10 mins.
Ask students to complete the sentence with the words from the box. Students then listen to the conversations
again to check their answers. When correcting, elicit the correct pronunciation, especially of the target language.

1. wound 2. allergic
3. dislocated 4. scalded
5. sprained 6. attack
7. choked 8. unconscious

3. Vocabulary 2

10 mins.
Tell students these are the problems from the listening task. What first aid should be given to these casualties?
Ask students to discuss in pairs, then match the pictures to the issues.

Please note that in the US "EpiPen" is used to refer to an epinephrine shot.

1. stitches 2. (epinephrine/EpiPen) shot

3. a sling 4. ointment and dressing

7. recovery position 8. CPR
Students then read and listen to extended versions of the conversations to check their answers. Ask them to
compare in pairs before you correct them as a whole class. When correcting, practice the pronunciation of the
target language.

4. Grammar

Part 1
10 mins.
Go over the grammar box with students, giving and eliciting further examples. Students then complete the task.
When correcting, elicit why this tense was used (e.g., to give a context for a past action, because the time is not
mentioned or because the time is mentioned).

1. Past Continuous 2. Past Simple

3. Present Perfect 4. Past Continuous
5. Present Perfect 6. Present Perfect
7. Present Perfect 8. Past Simple
9. Past Continuous 10. Past Simple
11. Present Perfect
Part 2
5 mins.
Do the first sentence as a whole group. Ask students which verb tenses would be more suitable here and why
(present perfect, because the time reference is not specific). Then elicit the form of the present perfect for this
question. Students complete the other sentences. Encourage them to think of the verb tense first, then write the
form. When correcting, elicit what tense was used and why.

1. Have ≀ had 2. sprained ≀ playing

3. stitched ≀ sent 4. haven’t felt
5. was climbing ≀ fell ≀ broke 6. Did ≀ check

5. Speaking

students choose one of the photos and write a dialogue on it. Students perform their dialogues in front of the
class.

6. Extension activity / homework

Part 1
10 - 15 mins.
Students choose one of the seven situations from the listening tasks and write about it. When finished, you can
display the reports on the classroom walls for the other students to see.
Part 2
10 mins.
This task aims to further develop students’ vocabulary within the lexical groups of the unit (injuries and other
health problems, and verbs for first aid). Ask students to look at the pictures to see what’s happening in each. Are
