Paramedic: Good. Just keep your foot elevated and you can take a painkiller if necessary.

4 Grammar
Part 1: Read the sentences from the dialogues. Are the underlined parts in the Present Perfect , Past
Simple, or Past Continuous?
When we talk about a past event and mention when it happened, we use Past Simple.
When we talk about past experiences and don’t mention the time specifically, we often
use Present Perfect.
Part 2: Complete the sentences below with the Present Perfect, Past Simple or Past Continuous of
the verbs in brackets.

5 Speaking
In pairs, role play a conversation related to one of the pictures below.
Include:
Part 1: Choose a situation from the lesson and complete the report about it. Explain what happened
and how you treated the casualty.
Part 2: Look at the photos and complete the words and phrases with vowels. Are these (A) injuries
and other health problems or (B) phrases for first aid?

5 mins.
In pairs, guess what has happened in each photo. They might attempt to use present perfect or past simple in
some of them. Make notes of any mistakes for future reference, but don’t make any corrections yet.
Suggested answers:
A) He is having an allergic reaction; B) Her hand has been scalded; C) He has a wound on his leg; D) She is having
a heart attack; E) He has dislocated his shoulder; F) He is unconscious; G) She is choking; H) He has sprained his

2. Vocabulary 1
Part A
10 mins.
Ask students to listen to the conversations and match to the photos above. Ask students to compare answers by
saying what’s happening in each, in order to practice the target language. Then correct as a whole class.
Please note that in the US Emergency services are referred to as ’911’ as that is the number you dial to contact
them.

Ask students to complete the sentence with the words from the box. Students then listen to the conversations
again to check their answers. When correcting, elicit the correct pronunciation, especially of the target language.

4. Grammar
Part 1
10 mins.
Go over the grammar box with students, giving and eliciting further examples. Students then complete the task.
When correcting, elicit why this tense was used (e.g., to give a context for a past action, because the time is not
mentioned or because the time is mentioned).
5. Speaking
15 mins.
Pair students. Go over each photo, eliciting what might have happened and what first aid might be given. In pairs,
students choose one of the photos and write a dialogue on it. Students perform their dialogues in front of the
class.
Part 1
10 - 15 mins.
Students choose one of the seven situations from the listening tasks and write about it. When finished, you can
display the reports on the classroom walls for the other students to see.
Part 2
10 mins.
This task aims to further develop students’ vocabulary within the lexical groups of the unit (injuries and other
health problems, and verbs for first aid). Ask students to look at the pictures to see what’s happening in each. Are
