GUNUNG AGUNG

Mount Agung is most commonly approached from the south via Klungkung and Candidasa, from the west
via Besakih, or from the east via Tirta Gangga and Karangasem. The east coast road north
from Amed through Tulamben and onto Singaraja provides some awe-inspiring views of the mountain
across flat rubble plans.
 Activity Level: High to Extreme.

 Hiking Duration: 8 hours (up & down).

 Temperature: 6 – 12° Celsius (At the summit).

Climbing routes
1. From Besakih (west) to the summit. This is a demanding climb starting close to Besakih temple. The
ascent will take about 6 to 7 hours and ends at the very highest point of the mountain.

2. From Pura Pasar Agung (south) to crater rim above Pura Pasar temple. The climb starts directly at
Pasar Agung Temple at an altitude of about 1,550 meters and brings you up to about 2,800 meters,
resulting in a total ascend of about 1,250 meters. It generally takes three to four hours, however,
experienced climbers in good condition hike up in less than two and a half hours and go down in one and a
half hours. The first third of the climb is a dusty path through a forest (which can be very slippery in the dry
season). During the second third you will walk over broken rock and the the final third includes some
climbing over solified lava. Not as stiff as the Besakih route. Strength, rather than endurance will be the
limiting factor for most people. The route ends about 100 metres below the actual summit, but the views are
still excellent, and you can look into the crater. If you want to reach the crater rim before sunrise then a
sensible start time would be about 2:30 AM, if not then you could start at 6AM and trek in the daylight.

2.1 From Pura Pasar Agung (south) to summit. The climb starts directly at Pasar Agung Temple and
initially follows the same path towards the crater rim above Pura Pasar, but there is a junction point at
roughly 2500m altitude where you can decide to continue up towards the rim (1h45m up), or turn left and
circle around to reach the summit in 3-4 hours from that junction. It is not well marked but the local guides
know it. Not recommended to try this without a guide unless you are an experienced mountaineer. There
are apparently red-white dot marks like in Austrian mountains but they aren’t easy to find especially if you
get clouds coming in.

3. From Duku Bujangga Sakti (north). A seldom used route but one which is most appropriate for less
experienced trekkers and the slightly less physically fit. The ascent starts at 300 metres and involves an
overnight camp at 1,700 metres, before the final ascent in the pre-dawn hours the following day. This route
also allows you to walk around the rim of the crater to the absolute summit of the mountain.
GUNUNG BATUR

 Activity Level: Moderate.

 Hiking Duration: 4 hours.

 Temperature: 8 – 15° Celsius (At the summit).

A climb to the summit of Mount Batur - 1,700 metres and still an active volcano - to watch the sunrise is a
great experience for more energetic travellers. This is an easy climb of about 2 hours, and local guides
abound. You do not need to be in peak physical shape to complete this trek. Which parts of the mountain
are safely accessible change according to local volcanic activity.

In Toya Bungkah there are several small restaurants that specialise in locally caught fish from Lake Batur.

 Breakfast Overlook Vulcano, Jalan singaraja kintamani, [14]. 05.00 am - 11.00 Am. Kintamani has
choices for Breakfast overlooking the crater magnificent scenery, ranging from "warung" (simple and
cheap places) to big fancy restaurant which serves local and international cuisines for personal as well
as tour groups. Most of breakfast places come in moderate prices, even for the wonderful Lakeside
Resto; an international restaurant edit

 Kedisan, Jl Raya Sekardadi ((besides the lake Batur )). Recommend by local tour guy. Kedisan is a
resort and restaurant. You can eat on the rafted room and enjoy the whole lake and mountain, and the
raft is moving gently which make you feel special. The grill lake fish is a must, very fresh and tasty ( Rp
70,000 per kilo, about 3 fishes ), with Balinese sauce and onion sauce. The waiter is nice and kind, lots
of local Indonesian host party here. And the duck of the lake always coming to ask food. Rp 80,000 per
person

Toya Bungkah village- There are two commonly used ascent routes. Both are about the same length, but by
far the best is from Toya Bungkah itself, as more than half of the climb is through pleasant shady forest.
See a map of this route which is also available as a GPX file for import into your mapping app. The
alternative route from Pura Jati is across ancient lava fields, there is no shade whatsoever, and underfoot
conditions can be harsh. Longer treks of up to 10 hours are also available. These get you right off the
beaten path, and will appeal more to serious trekkers. One rewarding option is to scale Mount Abang on
the south eastern edge of the outer caldera. Ask at the guides association office. To avoid the hassle of
constant harassment by touts in the area asking high prices to guide you, book before you arrive in the
area. Most hotels in the area do packages including accommodation in the area or book with your hotel and
be driven up in the middle of the night.

Pre-dawn climbs timed to reach the peak at sunrise are popular, and also give you the best chance of
avoiding the cloud which often envelopes the mountain from mid-morning on-wards. From the peak of the
mountain the views in all directions are quite splendid. The sun rises over much higher Mount Agung to the
east, while the northerly aspect back towards the crater rim road takes in a large volcanic ash slope with
several steaming, active cones. A popular little gimmick from the guides during the climb is to cook an egg
on lava-heated rock. Fun, but also a stark reminder of just how active this volcano is.
