Introduction
This wonderful, fairly short walk to the truly wondrous Annapurna Sanctuary rightfully deserves the
reputation as a classic and is widely regarded as one of the easier true, great Himalayan treks. For
majestic high mountain scenery and ever changing, picturesque landscapes, this moderate trek is
hard to beat. Passing through delightful villages with neatly terraced rice fields through forests of
Rhododendron and Oak to the renowned viewpoint of Poon Hill, an awe inspiring mountain panorama
unfolds with the rising sun. Mighty Dhaulagiri dominates the skyline across the deepest valley in the
world, the Kali Gandaki, whilst Annapurna South looms high above in front of us. Entering the Modi
Khola valley, the twin summits of Machhapuchre (Fishtail) become apparent and ascending gradually
up the valley, we pass through cultivated lands and forest and up into bamboo woodlands emerging to
enter an amazing throne room of mountain gods, the Annapurna Sanctuary. This high mountain
amphitheatre is reached by walking through a narrow, natural portal that retained the secret of the
Sanctuary until 1956. Here at the foot of snow covered giants, the mountains of the Annapurna Massif
are revealed in close up detail and amazing clarity. After descending into the beautiful Modi Khola we
transfer to Pokhara. Here at Lakeside in Pokhara we can relax at Phewa Tal before flying back to
Kathmandu, where no doubt well celebrate the end of a short, but truly delightful Himalayan journey.
__________________________________________________________________________

Routine During the trek your main baggage is
transported by porters and youll walk each
day through small villages (with refreshments
on sale) to your next trekking lodge, in the
company of your friendly, experienced and
qualified Nepalese guide. Usually youll take
breakfast at your overnight halt and your main
baggage will set off in advance. Youll walk for
a few hours in the morning, then stop for lunch
either at a village, or take a scenic picnic, then
continue your trek in the afternoon and reach
your next stop in the late afternoon. Dinner will
usually be taken at your overnight lodge.

Walking conditions
Underfoot the trekking conditions on most of
this trip are fairly straightforward following very
good trails. As your main baggage is carried
for you, you will only need to carry your regular
daypack during the walking day. The daily
distances we walk are relatively modest (by
Himalayan trekking standards) although with
the trails usually being either steep up or
down, this popular trek still represents a
moderate challenge, especially when trekking
above 3000m. It is essential that you are
capable of walking 5-7 hours a day (both
ascent and descent) for several days
consecutively.

A full explanation of the trip grading can be
found online at www.walksworldwide.com. You
should ensure you are comfortable walking at
this level of grading and are physically
prepared for the trip.

Walk staff You will be accompanied by an
experienced, friendly English-speaking,
qualified Sherpa guide, as well as porters to
transport your main baggage throughout the
trekking days.

What you need to provide Your personal
equipment as detailed in the clothing and
equipment list later in this trip dossier.

Ecological considerations We believe that
we are one of the most ecologically aware tour
operators in Nepal. We ask for your full
consideration and co-operation concerning all
ecological matters, especially in the disposal of
rubbish. Disposal of plastic mineral water
bottles is especially of concern in the
Himalaya. If you have any suggestions for
improvements, please let our local staff know
and inform us at Walks Worldwide on your
return. It is with the tourists, the locals and the
tour operators' co-operation that we can
ensure that our tours are as eco-friendly as
possible.

The Holiday
Nepal Annapurna Sanctuary 3 www.walksworldwide.com
IMPORTANT-Due to the specialist nature of
our holidays, day to day itineraries should
be taken as a guide only, and as statements
of intent and not contractual obligations.
We regularly update our trip dossiers to
take into account changes to trekking
routes, accommodation, local transport etc.
Such changes are a factor of this type of
holiday and when made are out of
necessity. Other factors such as adverse
weather, unforeseen circumstances and
other matters entirely out of our control etc
can also lead to enforced changes during
the course of the holiday. It is not possible
to guarantee that any of our holidays will
operate exactly as per the anticipated
itinerary. The most current trip dossier will
be made available on our website. We will
also send you the most up to date trip
dossier with your Final Joining
Instructions approx. 2 weeks before
departure and you should carefully check
this for any changes that may affect your
plans. Before booking you should read our

Day 1
Depart UK and fly to Kathmandu

Day 2
Arrive in vibrant Kathmandu. Rendezvous at
the group hotel in Kathmandu no later than
1900hrs. (See Joining Arrangements and
Transfers section later in this trip dossier).
There will be a pre-trek group meeting at
1930hrs.
Hotel, Kathmandu

Day 3
A short, but dramatic flight takes us past the
giant Manaslu to Pokhara. From here well
transfer to the trailhead at Nayapul and
commence this fabulous trek to the Annapurna
Sanctuary. After descending from the road we
follow the rivers course to Birethanti (1025m).
The next couple of hours are uphill on a
stepped trail (apparently there are 3767 steps
in all) to reach the village of Hille (1524m).
Crossing a suspension bridge just beyond
Tikhedunga, we then enter an area of dense
forest to ascend for a further hour to our
overnight halt at Ulleri (1960m). Walking time
approx. 5 hours.
Trekking Lodge, Ulleri

Day 4
A fairly challenging day as an undulating,
uneven trail over several small hills leads to
another stepped trail, which we ascend. En
route we pass several Teahouses with
refreshments on sale, as well as many small
tribal homes. As we climb, we are eventually
treated to glimpses of Annapurna South.
Moving steadily higher we enter a wooded
area with large bamboo trees and beyond
Banthanti (2300m) the vegetation becomes
increasingly dense. Emerging from this jungle
at Nangathanti (2520m) after climbing more
steps a further hour of trekking brings us to
Ghorepani. Although Ghorepani means horse
watering place, therell be lots of trekkers
including ourselves here in Ghorepani
quenching their thirst, as this is the meeting
point of several trails. Walking time approx. 5
hours.
Trekking Lodge, Ghorepani

Day 5
Poon Hill is one of the classic Himalayan
viewpoints. Sunrise is the best time to be
astride Poon Hill and view the spectacle of the
early morning light turning the snow covered
Himalaya pink. So, well make the 1hour
ascent in the dark before the sun comes up.
Usually one or two enterprising locals are there
before us with a hot cuppa for sale as we wait
for it all to happen. As the sun comes up and
illuminates the peaks the effect of the light is
somewhat dreamlike as a magnificent
mountain panorama unfolds. Directly in front of
us Annapurna South and the satellite peak of
Hiunchuli are revealed in close up glory.
Across the Kali Gandaki mighty Dhaulagiri
once again dominates, whilst to the east the
iconic Fishtail, Machhapuchre can be seen. On
very clear days you can also see over to
Nepal Annapurna Sanctuary 6 www.walksworldwide.com
Pokhara and the lake there. Walking time
approx. 6 hours. Back to Ghorepani for
breakfast and then we follow a trail that takes
us northwards along a ridgeline that affords us
magnificent views of the Annapurna Massif. A
steep descent leads to a small settlement from
where we enter a heavily forested gorge. As
the gorge widens we descend a little more
before making the short, upward climb to
Tadapani (2590m)
Trekking Lodge, Tadapani

Day 6
As we descend through Rhododendron forest
we begin to enter the hills that form one side of
the scenic Modi Khola Valley. Reaching
Chuile, we contour through pleasant terraced
fields. Crossing the Kymnu Khola, a short
climb brings us into the Modi Khola Valley
proper which will ultimately leads us to the
Annapurna Sanctuary. A short walk after
passing through Daaulu, we arrive at
Chomrong (2170m).Walking time approx. 6
hours.
Trekking Lodge, Chomrong

Day 7
The next day the trail descends to cross the
Chommro Khola, then climbs around into the
Modi Khola valley and up on to the main ridge
high above the river. Stands of rhododendron,
oak and hemlock line the gorge, and the area
is a delight for bird lovers. After another two
hours of walking, mostly up steep hills, we
reach the village of Sinuwa (2,340m), the last
town before Bamboo. The iconic Fishtail which
we will first have viewed upon arrival as a
dramatic Pyramid shaped peak, will have now
revealed its twin summits and the reason for
its other name. We follow the valley climbing
steadily uphill to Doban (2505m).
Approximately two hours later we reach our
overnight destination, Himalayan
(2920m). Walking time approx. 7 hours
Trekking Lodge, Himalayan

Day 8
Its a relatively short walk today as we steadily
gain altitude and we may start to encounter
sections of ice on the trail as we move ever
deeper into the realms of the mountain gods.
Passing the fire-blackened overhang of the
Hinko Cave, the lodges of Deorali come into
view, which affords fine views back down the
Modi Khola Valley. A final push takes us
across the upper reaches of the Modi Khola to
reach a level grass covered moraine where
there are a number of lodges in an area
commonly referred to as Machhapuchre
Basecamp (3700m). With impressive views of
the fearsome steep slopes and ridges of
Machhapuchre we have now entered through
the narrow gateway of the Sanctuary. Walking
time approx. 4-5 hours.
Trekking Lodge, Machhapuchre Basecamp

Day 9
In actual fact today is remarkably short and
straightforward as we walk to one of the most
dramatic mountain environments on earth.
From our previous nights accommodation the
Nepal Annapurna Sanctuary 7 www.walksworldwide.com
walk in begins as a fairly easy angled ascent
that becomes even more dramatic with each
step. A short, final steep climb brings us into
this throne room of the mountain gods.

Well leave early in the morning to avoid the
clouds rolling in and obscuring what it is a
totally unbelievable sight, in this most
impressive amphitheatre of Himalayan
leviathans. Seemingly impenetrable snow
covered giants with a multitude of seracs,
steep angled slopes and long, jagged ridges
surround us and now we will begin to
appreciate truly why this place has been
named Sanctuary. From left to right the list of
these peaks include Hiunchuli, Annapurna
South, Baraha Shikar (Fang), mighty
Annapurna I, Singu Chuli (Fluted Peak) and
Tharpu Chuli (Tent Peak). The Base Camp lies
at the foot of the Annapurna Glacier's lateral
moraine, and from the top of the moraine we
can see the gray, rock-strewn bulk of this
glacier far below. The rumble of rock and ice
slides coming off Annapurna South frequently
breaks the silence of the Sanctuary. Walking
time approx. 3 hours.
Trekking Lodge, Annapurna Basecamp

Day 10
We now leave the Sanctuary to follow a route
that initially was also our ascent route, but then
ultimately take an alternative route via
Ghandruk. So, today is virtually all descent to a
small settlement called Bamboo
(2335m).Walking time approx. 7 hours
Trekking Lodge, Bamboo

Day 11
A bit more up and down today, Two long
ascents followed by two long descents bring us
to Chomrong from where the trail climbs to a
spur ridge overlooking Jhinu Danda (1,780m).
From here we have one last close-up glimpse
of Machhapuchare,Hiunchuli, and Annapurna
South. Entering Kimrong Khola valley the trail
evens out for a while and the walking is easy!
We arrive at the junction with the route from
Ghorepani and just beyond the village of
Kimrong (1,780m), the trail suddenly drops in
short, steep switchbacks, then through open
rock-strewn fields to the 'Gurung' village of
Ghandruk (1,940m), a village which has grown
large and prosperous thanks to the pensions of
retired Gurkha soldiers.Walking time approx. 7
hours.
Trekking Lodge, Ghandruk

Day 12
A relatively easy final day of trekking as we
descend from Ghandruk on a wide paved trail
into increasingly lush landscapes to reach the
banks of the Modi Khola River. A fairly level
walk brings us back to Birethanti from where
its a mere 45 minutes back to the roadhead
where well transfer to the laid back Lakeside
resort area on the outskirts of Pokhara.
Checking into a hotel, the rest of the afternoon
is free to explore the Lakeside area and/or
Nepal Annapurna Sanctuary 8 www.walksworldwide.com
relax in one of the many delightful caf bars on
the shores of Phewa Tal, or perhaps take a
boat out on the lake or even go for a swim.
Walking time approx. 4 hours.
Hotel, Pokhara

Day 13
In the morning we fly from Pokhara to
Kathmandu, with the rest of the day free for
last minute shopping and exploring at your
leisure in Kathmandu. (If youre taking part in
our Chitwan National Park extension instead of
flying to Kathmandu youll be driven to Chitwan
from Pokhara).See Nepal extensions at the

liable, for losses incurred relating to any flight
bookings or subsequent travel arrangements
you have made yourself.

Once your chosen holiday has reached
guaranteed status we will contact you

Passports and Visas
British nationals will need a visa for Nepal. You
will also need a valid passport with at least 6
months remaining validity. By far the easiest
way to obtain a visa for Nepal is upon arrival at
Kathmandu International Airport. You will need
a passport size photograph and the visa fee,
which is payable in US Dollars/Sterling etc. At
the time of writing the visa fee is $25 for a 15
day visa and $40 for a 30 day visa and may be
subject to change at short notice. You can also
apply for a visa from the Nepalese Embassy in
your own country.

Accommodation will be reserved for you on a
twin share basis in hotels unless you have
already requested a single room at a
supplementary cost. Please note that the
single supplement applies ONLY to nights
spent in Hotels in Kathmandu. Whilst on trek it
is not possible to reserve a single room in
advance, however it may be possible to
arrange single rooms at each lodge upon
arrival at each lodge (subject to availability)
and pay the cost difference locally. In
Kathmandu you will usually be staying in a
good standard tourist class hotel, with en suite
facilities and swimming pool. On trek you will
stay in simple, atmospheric and very friendly
Nepalese trekking lodges (tea houses).
Although the lodges are simple, considering
the incredible distance they are from the
nearest road most people are amazed they
actually exist at all. You will need a sleeping
bag and thermarest (camping mat) whilst
staying in lodges. Rooms in trekking lodges
will be basic but comfortable, with a simple
wooden bed and all will have some form of
shared toilet and washing facilities. Rooms
may be a mixture of twin-bedded rooms or
small dorm rooms. Staying in lodges is clearly
more comfortable than camping and is a great
way of meeting both locals and fellow trekkers
alike. Beer and soft drinks are usually available
wherever you are.

Food
In Kathmandu there is a dizzying selection of
restaurants to choose from, serving both
delicious local and International cuisine to suit
a broad range of tastes and budgets. Whilst on
trek most meals will be taken at the various
trekking lodges along the way. The trekking
lodges have to source most of their food locally
due to their extremely remote locations, so you
can expect similar menus in each lodge based
on fresh local produce. From local specialities
such as Dal Bhat, to Noodle Soups and have
a go cooking western style dishes and usually
vegetarian options, rice and noodle dishes.
Breakfasts will usually be simple affairs with
porridge, eggs, toast etc and lunches will either
be taken at lodges along the way, or picnic
style. During the trek it is possible to buy
snacks, chocolate, soft drinks and beer on
most days. Please be aware that since
everything has to be carried up from the
roadhead (and the rubbish carried out), these
items become more expensive the further from
the roadhead you get.

Climate
It is of course impossible to predict the precise
weather conditions you will encounter during
the course of your holiday. However, we do
schedule our holidays to coincide with what
should be the most suitable weather periods
for walking, either side of the monsoon and not
too hot or cold for trekking, although it will be
colder (but often also crystal clear) at higher
altitudes, with the possibility of snow and night
time temperatures falling below freezing
towards the highest points of this trek.
Mountains are notorious for creating their own,
localised weather conditions, so you should
always be prepared for inclement weather
conditions. For climate statistics visit
www.worldweather.org/.
Roughly speaking temperatures decrease by
approx. 1C for every 200 metre increase in
altitude.

Altitude
This trek involves going to moderately high
altitudes, but is not something to be worried
about. Most people adapt to altitude quite well
and there is plenty of oxygen even at the
highest point of this trip. But, you should take
care to allow yourself to acclimatise. You can
do this by ensuring you drink between 3 and 6
litres of liquid each day, and walk at a pace
slower than you perhaps usually would,
especially at the outset and when ascending.
We are always happy to give further advice on
altitude related concerns.

Local transport
Included transfers will usually be by car or
mini-bus. You will also fly to from Kathmandu
to Pokhara and to Kathmandu from Pokhara.

Nepal Annapurna Sanctuary 10 www.walksworldwide.com
Baggage
Please make sure that your baggage is clearly
marked with your name, inside as well as
outside, in case the labels get detached. We
request you limit your luggage whilst on trek to
a maximum of 12kg, and recommend you to
pack your clothes in plastic bags to ensure
they remain dry. If your trek baggage exceeds
the specified weight you may be charged extra
for Porterage, as well as excess baggage
charges on the domestic flights. Your main
baggage will be transported by /porter during
the trekking element of this holiday.
SUITCASES MUST NOT BE USED for your
main baggage and will be refused porterage.
Please ensure your main baggage is packed in
either a soft holdall style kitbag, or a large,
unframed rucksack. Contact us if you are
unsure about the suitability of your main
baggage. Extra baggage may be left in your
hotel in Kathmandu while you are trekking.

Vaccinations and medical precautions
We always recommend visiting your doctor
and dentist for a check up before travelling.
Your doctor will also have access to the most
up to date information on vaccinations and
medical precautions for the country you are
about to visit. In general we recommend
however, that you be protected
against TB, typhoid, polio, tetanus and
hepatitis A. Malarial prophylaxis is not
recommended for this trip unless you intend to
visit the Terai region of Nepal (such as during
an extension to Chitwan National Park). A
useful travel health online resource is
fitfortravel.scot.nhs.uk

First Aid
You should always carry your own small,
personal first aid kit. This should consist of the
following: A general anti-biotic, throat
lozenges, painkillers, plasters (band-aids),
blister treatment, insect repellent (DEET),
rehydration salts, antiseptic cream, altitude
(Diamox) diarrhoea treatment (e.g. Imodium)

Currency.
The Nepalese currency is the Rupee. Please
refer to www.xe.com/ for up to date rates. You
will need to change the majority of your travel
money whilst in Kathmandu at the beginning of
your holiday. You can do this by withdrawing
money (in Rupees only) from one of many
ATMs in Kathmandu (if your card is linked to
the International Cirrus System), or by
exchanging your travel cash at a bank in
Kathmandu. There are also ATM machines in
Pokhara.

Language
Although your guide will speak English, its
always a good idea to take along a
English/Nepalese phrase book and learn a few
simple words to greet the local people.

Tipping
This is at your discretion and we must stress
that tips do not form part of the wages of your
guide and trek crew. However, Nepalese
people are as a rule incredibly cheerful and
friendly and nothing ever seems too much
trouble for them. Your guide and trek crew will
be no exception. If you have received good
service, a tip at the end of your trek will be
greatly appreciated. As a guideline we
recommend an amount of 2 per group
member per day for Porters tips, which will be
pooled and shared out collectively. For your
guide we suggest 15 per group member is
not unreasonable.

Travel Insurance
It is a condition of booking any of our holidays
that you have comprehensive travel insurance.
It is your to responsibility to ensure you are
covered for medical and personal accident
risks for the part of the world you intend to
travel and the activities involved. This cover
should include repatriation costs, air
ambulance and helicopter rescue. It is also
advisable to take out cancellation insurance as
all deposits paid are non-refundable.

You may arrange either single-trip or annual
multi-trip travel insurance through Walks
Worldwide. Please call us on 0845 301 4737
or e-mail us- sales@walksworldwide.com
