The Urgency of Cleaner Steelmaking

Cleaner steelmaking at Algoma Steel is crucial for the city of Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario

largely due to the detrimental environmental and health dangers which arise as a consequence.

The article specifically examines the high pollution levels that the steel plant is emitting by

exceeding the air pollution limits and the contamination of the St. Mary’s River in this manner.

To supplement the issue, I chose the second story titled "Algoma Steel workers allege company

had ‘full knowledge’ of exposure to lethal, cancer-causing chemicals “which was published in

the Environmental Health News (EHN) in 2020. However, this article supports the grievances

outlined in the original article by bringing up pollution matters which are associated with

Algoma Steel plant.

The given two articles focus on the environmental damage and public health impacts

resulted from Algoma Steel’s emissions around. These reservations are associated with serious

emissions of benzene, particulate matter and others, which were scientifically proven to be

responsible for increased rates of cancer and other health issues in nearby population (Hillary p.

1). Although having a regulator, Algoma Steel exceeds emission standards and goes under

criticism for environmental pollution.

The two articles argue strongly the process of utilizing cleaner steel options. Algoma

hazardous pollutants. Federal funding for this green remodel also represents a recognition of the

urgency to involve our environment issues (Brian p.1).

In the sum-up, the two articles provide an equally strong argument for urging the

transition to cleaner steelmaking in Algoma Steel. Although the environmental impacts of steel

production are detrimental and health threatening, we need to have sustainable practices in place.

The works in curtailing pollution and improving quality of air and quality of water is paramount

to protecting the health of northern Ontario communities.
