PREFACE

The main objective of the Internship Report is to fulfil the partial requirements
for course Master of Library and Information Science Degree.

It is the output of the one month long (30 working days) internship in the
Bangalore University Library.

An internship is a very good opportunity to gain practical knowledge about any

real-world concept. Internship bridges the theory with the practice in any
particular field of study.

Thus, it clarifies the theoretical concept of the students which may not be possible
only through class lectures and follow up examinations. Internship gives the
students a clear-cut idea about what they learnt in the theory and whether these
are implemented in the real-world situation accordingly or with modifications.
This real-life experience helps the students to make them eligible for the job
environment.

After the completion of the internship program, I have gathered enough

experience about the acquisition, processing and dissemination of library reading
materials, managerial activities, stock verification, library website, reference
services, etc. which I have shared in different chapter of the report.

Introduction

 A library is an organized collection of sources of information and similar

resources, made accessible to a defined community for reference or
borrowing. It provides physical or digital access to material, and maybe a
physical building or room, or a virtual space, or both. Libraries are vital social
institutions. No community is considered complete without a library. From the
early age of human civilization libraries are considered as the most important
social organization. And the modern age of knowledge and science it is
undeniable that libraries and information centres are highly needed in a
country/society.

 In our country there are a number of different types of libraries (i.e. Public,
Academic, Special etc) exist. To ensure better services in these libraries skilled
and qualified library and information professionals are highly needed.

Rationale of the study

 Fresh graduates of any professional discipline are not ready to work

productively until they receive training. Training provides experience in the
field while academic education or knowledge gives an understanding of how
to perform. Intensive programs of lectures, seminars and mentoring help a new
professional to develop an early career.

 Internships may be part of an educational program and carefully monitored

and evaluated for academic credit, or internships may be part of a learning
plan that someone develops individually. An important element that
distinguishes an internship from a short-term job or volunteer work is that an
intentional “learning agend” is structured into the experience.
 Learning objectives common to most internship include learning objectives,
observation, reflection, evaluation and assessment. An effort is made to
establish a reasonable balance between the interns’ learning goals and the
specific work an organization needs to be done. Internships promote
academic, career or personal development within the field. Many schools of
library and information science routinely offer their student experimental
learning opportunities such as internship as a means of introducing students to
the realities of the workplace and fostering a sense of professional identity and
values.
 In turn, many libraries accept or actively seek interns to assist with library
projects and responsibilities; all while offering opportunities for hands on
learning in a real - world environment.

Digital Library:

Digital library is a computerized system that allows users to obtain a coherent

means of access to an organized, electronically stored repository of information
and data. The digital library is on electronic library consisting of information in
the digital analog and digitized form.

The immediate goal that set before us is to allow access to all researchers in social
sciences to important material available across the partner institutions and also
facilitate the partner institutions to share the knowledge bank available with
us. The first step in this digitization programmed is to get as many books, theses,
documents, journals and rare materials for the use of the researchers. Our goal is
to open this knowledge portal and the materials to all those who seek such help.
D-Space:

D-space is a ground breaking digital repository system that captures, stores,

indexes, Preserves and distributes digital research materials. Choice for
repository software providing the means for making information openly available
and easy to manage.

D-space is an open-source digital repository software that is widely used by

libraries and other organizations to store, manage, and provide access to digital
content such as research papers, reports, and other scholarly works.
E-Prints:

BUL has launched an ePrint digital repository of scholarly publications for quick
and easy browsing.
Shodhaganga:

Thesis and dissertations are known to be the rich and unique source of
information, often the only source of research work that does not find its way into
various publication channels. Thesis and dissertations remain an un-tapped and
under-utilized asset, leading to unnecessary duplication and repetition that, in
effect, is the anti-thesis of research and wastage of huge resources, both human
and financial.

The UGC Notification (Minimum Standards & Procedure for Award of M.Phil. /
Ph.D. Degree, Regulation, 2009 Amendment made on 2016) dated 5th May 2016
mandates submission of electronic version of thesis and dissertations by the
researchers in universities with an aim to facilitate open access to Indian thesis
and dissertations to the academic community world-wide. Online availability of
electronic theses through centrally-maintained digital repositories, not only
ensure easy access and archiving of Indian doctoral theses but will also help in
raising the standard and quality of research. This would overcome serious
problem of duplication of research and poor quality resulting from the "poor
visibility" and the "unseen" factor in research output.

As per the Regulation, the responsibility of hosting, maintaining and making the
digital repository of Indian Electronic Thesis and dissertations (called
“shodhganga”), accessible to all institutions and Universities, is assigned to the
INFLIBNET Centre.

Shodhganga" is the name coined to denote digital repository of Indian Electronic

Thesis and Dissertations set-up by the INFLIBNET Centre. The word "Shodh"
originates from Sanskrit and stands for research and discovery. The "Ganga" is
the holiest, largest and longest of all rivers in Indian subcontinent. The Ganga is
the symbol of India's age-long culture and civilization, ever changing, ever-
flowing, ever-loved and revered by its people, and has held India's heart captive
and drawn uncounted millions to her banks since the dawn of
history. Shodhganga stands for the reservoir of Indian intellectual output stored
in a repository hosted and maintained by the INFLIBNET Centre Search thesis
