About the 2014 Guidebook"
!
!

!
!
!
!
This is the 8th year that I have conducted an annual survey of learning tools from the votes of
learning professionals worldwide, and this year I compiled the 2014 list from the contributions of
1,038 learning professionals - from both education and training - working in 61 countries.
!
I defined a learning tool as
! “any software or online tool or service that you use either for your own personal or
professional learning, for teaching or training, or for creating e-learning.”
!
The annual Top 100 Tools lists have become very popular, and have become a useful longitudinal
study into how the way we learn is changing. Take a look at my analysis of this year’s list.

!
In this 2014 Guidebook I provide
!
• basic information about each of the 100 tools on the list (website, cost, availability as well as
their rankings on the list 2007-2014)
• their key features together with screenshot(s)
• links to useful guides and resources
!
The PDF has been produced in US Letter format, but if you do want to print it, it can also be
printed on other paper sizes, e.g. A4.
!
Links die frequently, so whilst working through the Guidebook, if you spot any dead ones, please
do let me know at jane.hart@c4lpt.co.uk.

1 - Twitter
!
HAS BEEN #1 FOR 6 YEARS RUNNING
!
Twitter is an online social networking and micro-blogging service that allows its users to send and
receive text-based messages (tweets) of up to 140 characters
!
Website: www.twitter.com
Cost: Free
Available: Online
!
Rankings 2007-2014

2010: 1 2009: 1 2008: 11 2007: 43=
!
Key features
!
• You establish connections with people by “following” them and this means you will receive their
tweets in your news feed. Take a look at an individual’s profile page and their recent tweets and
then decide if this is someone you would like to follow. If you later decide that you don’t want
to follow them, it is easy to unfollow them.
• You can set up your own profile and design your own Twitter page, so that people can find out
more about you, and what you tweet about.

Page 10
• There are a number of different ways to tweet:
• To send a tweet to all your followers – Just enter your message in less than 140
characters and press send. All those who are following you will receive it. It will also be listed
on your public timeline, so that if anyone looks at your Twitter profile they will see it there
too.
• Re-tweet someone else’s tweet – If you are re-posting the complete tweet from someone
else, Twitter automatically shows this as a RT. If you are changing the original tweet somehow
then change RT to MT (Modified Tweet). Tweeters often add their own comments in a re-
tweet, and mark it off from the original tweet with symbols like < | or /
• Mention someone in a tweet – Use their username, e.g @C4LPT in the tweet. But note
that if you put @username at the beginning of the tweet, only your followers who ALSO
follow that person will see the tweet (i.e not everyone who follows you will receive it) –
although it will still appear on your public timeline. Twitter considers this to be a tweed to that
user rather than broadcast tweet.
• Send a private message to someone – aka a Direct Message (or DM). Put d in front of
their Twitter name, e.g. “d C4LPT how are you?” Note, only that person will receive the tweet
AND The tweet will NOT appear in your timeline
• Twitter lists are aggregated lists of people, so if you follow a list, you essentially follow all the
people in that list. You can even create your own Lists, if you want, to categorise those you
follow.
• Twitter hashtags are keywords beginning with the character # which can be placed anywhere
in tweet. Hashtags are used to keep related tweets together on a subject, so, if you click on a
hashtag, you will see a list of recent tweets that have also used that same hashtag. Popular
hashtags are shown on the Twitter screen as Trends, so when a hashtag appears here it is said
to be “trending”. Here’s an example of how tweets using the hashtag #learning might be
viewed together.

• Hashtags are used at conferences and other events to allow people to discuss the conference or
event session in a Twitter backchannel. Backchannels also means you don’t have to be
present in the event itself to find out and discuss what is taking place. As a presenter you can
might also tweet yourself into the backchannel.

Page 11
• Hashtags are also used in live Twitter
chats to support regular synchronous
discussions on Twitter. These Twitter
chats have become very popular on all
subjects. To the right is a screenshot of
some of the tweets at #lrnchat Qs and
As refer to question numbers in the
chat.
• Although you can use Twitter on the
Web to read and receive tweets, many
people use some other desktop or
mobile app to do this. Two popular apps
t o d o t h i s a r e Tw e e t d e c k ( 5 1 )
& Hootsuite (39).

Key features
!
• Google Drive is the new name (and home) for Google Docs, and
here you can also upload files and folders as well as synchronize
files with your own devices, so that if you change a file on the Web,
or on your computer or on your mobile device, it updates every
device where you’ve installed Google Drive. That means you’ll
always have the latest version of your files and Google Docs
available.
• You can upload a file to Drive from your computer, or create a new
file (see screenshot to the right), of one of the following types (see
screenshot below):

• You can create documents on your own or with others, and the collaboration functionality of
means that each person has an equal ability to add, edit, or delete items, whilst only one
master version of the document is maintained – and what’s more the master document is
updated in real-time.
• If you are already familiar with Microsoft Office tools (Word, PowerPoint and Excel), then the
interface looks very similar, so you shouldn’t have any trouble transferring your skills.

Page 13
• By default your file is private – it is only visible to you and can be edited by you. To share the
document with others, you click the Share button.

• You can either share your document with a specified group of people by entering their email
addresses, and giving them the relevant rights …

• … or you can get a shareable link that anyone can view or edit or comment.

• With Google Slides you also have the facility to present your slides online. Simply select
Present in the top right hand corner, and then decide how you want to present it.

Page 14
• Google Forms lets you to gather information from a number of people quickly, and store the
data in a spreadsheet where you can analyse it. Questions can be of different types, and you
can make any question a required question (as appropriate).

• When you have finished creating the questions,

you can select a Theme for your Form - and
there are hundreds to choose from.
• You can then send the form by email or get a
shareable link or embed code.
• You can then view the responses either as a
summary or the raw data as a spreadsheet.
Note: The spreadsheet that is generated is
stored on your Google Drive. Once you have
collected the data in your spreadsheet you can
then do whatever analysis of the data you
require.

DOWN 1 PLACE

Google is a powerful search engine. Often described as the only e-learning tool you’ll ever need.

Key features
• Google provides individuals with answers quickly and easily. Simply type your search term in the
box.

• But are you getting too many results? Effective web searching is becoming a new modern day
skill. Here are 5 simple things to remember in order to “power search” on Google:
1. Search string: A group of search terms is called a string. You don’t need to add a + or
AND between terms. just leave a space. Try building your search string one term at a time
to narrow down your search.
2. Google ignores common or “stop” words – like the, an, in, where, how – but
to include them in a search add + before each one
3. Phrase string: If you’re looking for an exact phrase or quote, not just the occurrence of
the words entered, use quotation marks around the words, like “greenhouse effect”
4. Ranking: Google favours pages with your words in phrases, close together and in the
order typed. Compare the top results (ranking) for searches in Google for these sets of
keywords
• grass snake
• snake grass
• snake in the grass
• snake +in +the grass

5. Operators: adding a minus sign (-) allows you to narrow your search, for example if you
wanted to search for New York but not City you’d enter New York -City; adding OR will let
you look for one or more terms or strings, e.g. Kent OR Sussex, “global warming” OR
“greenhouse effect”.

Page 19
• Remember that creating a search string that uses some combination of specific terms, a phrase
string and a negative term can reduce the number of your search results from a few million to
fewer than one hundred! So it’s best to build one or two terms at a time, adding terms to your
string as needed based on your results.

Key features
• WordPress is available in a number of versions
• the hosted service is where most individuals host their personal WordPress blogs
• the free open-source downloadable version can be used to set up your personal blogging
platform. (Note many hosting services nowadays include the functionality to auto-install
WordPress for you.)
• the WordPress multi-site version can be activated when installing the open source version,
and is an ideal way for an organisation (enterprise or educational) to provide a blogging
platform for their people.
• However, WordPress is much more than a blogging site, since it has the facility to create
static pages in addition to blog posts, this means it can be used to build a complete website.
• You set up and manage your blog in your Dashboard. Here you can also see your site stats.
The left-hand navigation bar provides access to all the other Wordpress functionality (as shown

• Media is where you upload and manage the digital assets you use in your posts and pages.
• Pages is where here you can add pages and manage existing pages.

Key features
!
• There are two ways to have a presence on Facebook. (1) You can have a personal account
and/or (2) a professional page or pages. Note, that Facebook’s terms and conditions state
that you can not have more than one personal account, although you can set up multiple
Facebook pages.
• With Facebook personal accounts you have reciprocal friendships with other Facebook
members, and their status updates appears in your news feed at Home. You can also write
your own update and add photos, videos, and links. Facebook personal account holders can also
join groups and even create their own public or private group, to have conversations with
friends and
colleagues. Groups
are also often used by
educators for
classroom purposes.

!!
!!
!
Page 27
!
• Although personal account holders can also create pages, to set up a Facebook page you
don’t have to have a Facebook account.
• Facebook pages can be set up by individuals, businesses and other organisations, for example
to promote or market their services, event or book or just for discussion around topic areas.
• With Facebook pages you do not establish “friendships” with Facebook members as you do with
a personal account, rather other Facebook members can simply “like” your page in which case,
postings on your page will appear in their personal activity streams. However, Facebook pages
are also visible to non-Facebook members.
• If you set up a Facebook page, you can later convert your Facebook page into a personal
account if you want to.
• Setting up a professional page is a useful way of keeping your personal and professional lives
separate; in other words you could use your personal account for keeping in touch with friends
and for personal activities, and a Facebook page for your professional activities.

!
Key features
!
• Started in 2001, Wikipedia (in English) now has over 4 million content articles and over 33
million pages in total. Here’s an example of an article on Wikipedai.

!
• Every page in Wikipedia can be “edited”, which means it is constantly evolving and growing and
can be kept up to date.
!!

Page 48
• To edit Wikipedia, you simply select the Edit button. To edit the page, you will need to use the
Wikipedia mark-up language (see screenshot below).
• If you are not logged in, your IP address is tracked. If you are logged in, your edits will be
attributed to a user name in the View History (see screenshot below).

• Because Wikipedia has

been created by
individuals, its credibility is
often questioned,
particularly as there have
been some high profile
cases of incorrect
information being added to
it. However, a number of
studies have showed that
Wikipedia is at least as
reliable as other
encyclopaedias, such as
Encyclopaedia Britannica.
• Neverthless, educators are
still often reluctant to encourage the use of Wikipedia in education, so the Wikipedia Education
Program was set up to help educators and students contribute to Wikipedia in an academic
setting.
