I. IDIOMS
A. IDIOMS about COMMUNICATION &MEDIA:
➢ Big mouth – used as criticism of someone when they say things they
should not
● Don’t tell Jane anything you want to remain secret – she’s got a
big mouth.
➢ Come clean ( about sth)- tell the truth about sth that you have kept
secret
● You’d better come clean and tell mom it was you who broke
the window.
➢ Get/catch sb’s drift –understand the basic meaning
● Doris and I have been having some problems recently – if you
catch my drift.
➢ Get sth off your chest-talk to someone about sth that has been
worrying you, so that you feel better about it
● It feels such a relief to have got this off my chest
➢ Get the wrong end of the stick – understand sth completely wrongly
● Don said he was going to U.S but I got the wrong end of the
stick that he was moving there forever.
➢ Give sb your word –promise to do sth
● I give you my word I won’t tell anyone.
➢ ( Hear sth ) on/ through the grapevine – the way in which
information spreads quickly from one person to another through
conversation
● I heard through the grapevine that you might be getting
married.
➢ Keep sb posted – regularly give someone information about sth they
are interested in , for example how a situation is changing or
developing
● Do please keep me posted about any developments.
➢ Keep sth under your hat – keep sth secret
● Keep it under your hat, but we think that we will buy a new
house.

➢ Lay/ put your cards on the table –tell people exactly what you are
thinking or what you are intending to do

B. PRACTICE:

e.g: They are digging up the football field to lay a new surface.
● to remove something from the ground by digging
e.g: An old Roman vase was dug up here last month.
● to discover information about somebody/something
e.g: Tabloid newspapers love to dig up scandal.
3. do up:
● to be fastened
e.g: The skirt does up at the back.
● to make something into a package
e.g: She was carrying a package done up in brown paper.
● to repair and decorate a house, etc.
e.g: He makes money by buying old houses and doing them up.
4. fold up:
● to make something smaller by bending it over on itself more than
once
e.g: His clothes were neatly folded up on a chair.
5. freshen up:
● to wash and make yourself look clean and tidy
e.g: Is there anywhere I can freshen myself up?
6. hold up:
● to remain strong and working effectively
e.g: She's holding up well under the pressure.
● to support somebody/something and stop them from falling
● to delay or block the movement or progress of somebody/something
e.g: An accident is holding up traffic.
● to use or present somebody/something as an example
e.g: His ideas were held up to ridicule.
● to steal from a bank, shop/store, etc. using a gun

e.g: Masked men held up a security van in South London yesterday.
7. keep up:
● When she lost all her money, she was determined to keep up
appearances (= hide the true situation and pretend that everything
was going well).
● if particular weather keeps up, it continues without stopping
● to move, make progress or increase at the same rate as
somebody/something
● to prevent somebody from going to bed
● to make something stay at a high level
● to continue to use or practice something
● to continue something at the same, usually high, level
e.g: Well done! Keep up the good work/Keep it up!
● to take care of a house, garden/yard, etc. so that it stays in good
condition
8. kick up:
● kick up something to make something go up into the air
e.g: The storm kicked up waves big enough to destroy homes.
● kick up a fuss/stink/row/dust INFORMAL to complain very
angrily about someone or something
e.g: The decision was changed after he kicked up a fuss.
9. polish up:
● to improve a skill by practicing
e.g: He’d spent the summer polishing up his flying skills.
B. PRACTICE
