MAKERERE COLLEGE SCHOOL

MAPA 2023/2024 SYLLABUS

To determine the syllabus below for MAPA 2024, the Organizing Committee of this annual event
was guided by factors ranging from the historical to the strategic importance of MAPA to this
institution and its stakeholders. Lots were cast for items that required making a random selection
to ensure fairness.

THEME: “Elevating standards for Excellence in promoting


our core values, environment and the New Lower Sec Sch
Curriculum”
A: MUSIC & DANCE

 Sight Singing (Staff Notations) - [Makerere Campus]

* Open to all classes (O). An eight-bar passage. The range is from d-s stepwise
movement with few leaps of an interval of a 3rd. Note values: Crochet
Quaver

* Start and end with a tonic

Class 1: Western Choral Singing


a) “Come Away Sweet Love” by Thomas Greaves - [O-Level Campus]
b) “Rejoice in the Lord” by George Elvey - [A-Level Campus]
Class 2: Uganda Traditional Folk Song - [A-Level Campus]
Each house will present a folksong from any of the given classes:
* It should last not more than six (9) minutes:
1. Central Region (on work & Marriage)
- Bikangaga (Work)
- Africa (Marriage)
2. Eastern Region (on work & marriage)
- Simba (Work)
- Lumumba (Marriage)
3. Western region (on work & marriage)
- Muteesa (Work)
- Kabalega (Marriage)
Both region and theme will be chosen by casting lots
Class 3: African Traditional Folk Dancing - [O-Level Campus]

Each house will present a dance from a selected choice from Uganda (Selected by
casting lots).
* It should last not more than nine (9) minutes.

1. Bakisimba, Nankasa, Muwogola (Central)


- Simba
2. Larakaraka (Northern)
- Lumumba
3. Nalufuka, Irongo, Tamenhaibuga (Eastern)
- Bikangaga
4. Runyege ntogoro (Western)
- Africa
5. Enzogyera (Nkore)
- Kabalega
6. Agwara (West Nile)
- Muteesa
Class 4: Musical Mime - [A-Level campus]
Each house will present a musical mime of their choice drawn from any part of the
globe based on the theme: “Elevating standards to promote Decency”
* The mime should be educative.
* Should be either in English or any of the local languages.
* Item should last not more than Six (6) minutes on stage.
* Message should not be embarrassing to the audience.

Class 5: Creative Dance - [O-Level campus]


Each house will present a contemporary creative dance on the theme, “Elevating
standards to green the School”
* There should be nothing indecent or vulgar.
* Producers should find creative ways of addressing their costuming challenges,
without causing harm to the environment. (Avoid using live green plants as props or
costumes).
* They can choose live or recorded accompaniment.
* Item should last not more than nine (6) minutes.

Class 6: Western Solo - [A-Level campus]


- Each house will present either an instrumental or vocal solo piece of their choice
auditioned in western style.

Class 7: African Solo - [O-Level campus]


- Each house will present either an instrumental or vocal solo piece of their choice
auditioned in traditional style.

B: DRAMA & ELOCUTION

Class 1: English Drama - (A-Level campus)


Each house will present an English play based on the sub- theme: Elevating standards to
promote (either) Justice (or) Accountability.
* The theme was chosen by casting of lots:
* JUSTICE:
- Muteesa
- Kabalega
- Africa
* ACCOUNTABILITY:
- Bikangaga
- Simba
- Lumumba
* Scripts of these plays are to be the original composition of students.
* Item should last not more than fifteen (15) minutes on stage.
* Message should not be embarrassing to the audience.

Class 2: Luganda Drama - [O-Level campus]


Each house will present a play in Luganda based on the sub- theme: Teaming up to enhance
decency (ubuntu)
* Scripts of these plays are to be the original composition of students.
* Item should last not more than fifteen (15) minutes on stage.
* Message should not be embarrassing to the audience.

Class 3: Extemporaneous English Speech - [A-Level campus]


Each house will present an unrehearsed, spontaneous Speech in English on a theme to be
picked on stage (selected from a pool of themes known to the learners)
* Item should last not more than five (5) minutes on stage.

Class 4: Extemporaneous (mbagirawo) Speech - [O-Level campus]


Each house will present an unrehearsed, spontaneous Speech in Luganda on a theme to
be picked on stage (selected from a pool of themes known to the learners)
* Item should last not more than five (5) minutes on stage.

MAPA SEASON & PREPARATIONS

 The syllabus was released early to allow houses adequate time to plan.

 MAPA 2024 was launched at 8.30am on Tuesday 26th March, 2024 at Mulawa. At
4.40pm on Wednesday 27th March, 2024 it was set in motion at the Main
Campus in Makerere.
 The music department will give us a schedule for the training of pilot choirs in
both western choral and sight singing, each of which, will be composed of at
least 15 representatives nominated by each house.
 The training of instrumentalists e.g. drummers, needs to be kick-started
immediately.
 The music department, with the support of Mr. Ssekibaala, is to create a pool of
African and western choral pieces from which the houses will make their
choices.
 A joint playwrights’ workshop will be held at Mulawa campus on Friday, 26th
April, 2024 at 9am.
 All house leadership was advised to set up teams for set piece and Solos and Mr.
Ssekibaala volunteered to come in and give guidance. So please act.

 This Season will run from 26th April, 2024 to 5th May, 2024.

 The Drama & Elocution competitions will run on 3rd May, 2024 starting at
8am. This will be done separately at the Main Campus for “O” level; and at
Mulawa for “A” level respectively.

 The MAPA Festival will be held on 5th May, 2024 at the Makerere University
Main Sports Ground.
