Title of the Lesson:

Introduction to the Rock Cycle

Subject(s):
Earth Science

Grade Level(s):
6th Grade

Content Standard Addressed:

S6E5.c Construct an explanation of how to classify rocks by their formation and how rocks change
through geologic processes in the rock cycle.

Technology Standard Addressed:

2.5.a accommodate learner differences.
2.5.c Create innovative learning environments.

Assessment:
Summative Assessment:
Following the unit, students will need to be able to thoroughly explain the rock cycle. Each student
with have to explain starting from a different point in the rock cycle to demonstrate that they
understand the rock cycle occurs at various points.

Learner Objectives:
• Students will be able to communicate the entire rock cycle and the processes that occur within
it using key terms and phrases.
• Students will be able to reproduce a rock cycle diagram.

Time Frame:
This specific unit introduction will take about two in-class days. We will spend the first day watching
a few videos and taking a look at diagrams about the rock cycle. Then, we will get further into the unit
by doing a rock lab, during which we take a look at and classify different types of rocks.

The “hook” or Introduction:
To introduce the lesson on the rock cycle to 6th graders, start with an engaging question or statement
like, "Have you ever wondered how rocks change over time?" Then explain that we'll be watching a
self-made video illustrating the rock cycle, using animations, diagrams, and real-life examples.
Emphasize the importance of understanding the rock cycle for Earth's history and natural phenomena.
Highlight the interactive nature of the activity, where students will watch the video, discuss, and ask
questions, fostering curiosity and deeper understanding. This approach ensures an engaging and
interactive learning experience that enhances comprehension and retention of geological concepts.

Process:
The process is the way you structure the learning to engage students in the learning experience to
achieve the goals and objectives. How are they going to accomplish the tasks? What are the students
doing? What is the teacher doing? How are you assessing the process of learning? What content and
activities will be online and what content and activities will be face-to-face? Are you planning to have
synchronous meetings? A sequence of unfolding events is usually provided, and a timeline is often
used for this section.
